The Ohio State Conundrum

Dec 27, 2020, 5:05 PM

Clemson by itself has more college football playoff wins than the entire Big 10, Pac 12, and Big 12 combined.

The good old days of being "selected" #1 by the Chicago Big 10 media and winning a national championship are over. You actually have to play a high quality team or two, and win the game(s) in today's world to win a championship.

"Claimed" Ohio State National Championships:

Year Selector Record Big Ten Record Bowl Final AP Final Coaches
1942 AP 9–1 6–1 – No. 1 ?
1954 AP 10–0 7–0 Won Rose Bowl No. 1 No. 2
1957 FWAA, UPI 9–1 7–0 Won Rose Bowl No. 2 No. 1
1961 FWAA 8–0–1 6–0 – No. 2 No. 2
1968 AP, UPI 10–0 7–0 Won Rose Bowl No. 1 No. 1
1970 NFF 9–1 7–0 Lost Rose Bowl No. 5 No. 2
2002 BCS, AP, UPI 14–0 8–0 Won Fiesta Bowl No. 1 No. 1
2014 CFP, AP, UPI 14–1 8–0 Won Sugar Bowl Won CFP Natl Chmpnship No. 1 No. 1

So giving Ohio State credit, it looks like they were undisputedly the best team in the country in 1968, 2002 and 2014. The other so-called championships were not won on the field. In 1970, so-called #1 Ohio State claims a national championship after losing 27-17 as 10-point favorites to Jim Plunkett and Stanford in the Rose Bowl. In 1942 Ohio State lost to Wisconsin 17-7 and moved down to #10 in the polls before rising to #3 at year end. In 1954, 1957, and 1970 Ohio State claimed championships when AP and/or Coaches rated other teams #1. Note all three Clemson natl championships are in the modern era and are undisputed.

civilengr posted a link to an article that looked at every national champion sine the very beginning. The writer said,

1900: "John Heisman’s 6-0 Clemson might as well claim [ a national title ], though Yale won twice as many games in a more established region."

The list of schools that would claim it is quite long.

The problem with Ohio St is they have the Bama

disease. They claim all sources for National Titles, regardless of the source. For decades there was the AP (sportswriters), and the UPI (Coaches Poll) and they seldom were the same. On top of those two polls, there were other polls that would come and go. That is why my favorite poll is the Consensus College Football National Champions from 1869 to 2019. The teams in bold are the "consensus" National Champions for each year. As you get to the end of the polls they are summarize by the teams total number of Consensus National Titles. See the link below. This is where Ohio St. only qualifies for 4 National Titles (see the team summaries on the link after the 1869 detail).

1954 as the consensus National Champion. For the Ohio St. fans that equals "four" titles.
