In scenic Cootlumbia this morning.

Feb 27, 2014, 4:37 PM

Had to drive to Cootlumbia this morning.

You know, parts of it, have got to be the state's garden spot.

Like near the Coots baseball stadium. Has a nice stadium ever been built in a prettier warehouse district?

And the Willy B, railroad tracks, junkyards, Bojangles, winos, crackheads, can it get any better than that?

And that flag on the statehouse grounds that keeps us from getting any NCAA basketball regionals or the ACC Baseball Tourney in this state. Wow, now that's cool, cause who would want those events?

Just a great trip to beautiful Cootlumbia.

I've said it before and I will say it again....

The City of Columbia is an absolute cesspool and a complete embarrassment to the State of South Carolina but in fairness, you really can't blame the whole flag issue on the City.

Feb 27, 2014, 9:24 PM [ in reply to So who wants it there?*** ]

The Governor for one - or at least she doesn't want to move it.

The Lt. Governor - who will be leaving is the main one that has wanted it there.

The Senate Majority leader, the Senate Finance Comm Chairman- The Speaker of the House are 3 powerful ones that don't want to touch it with a 10 foot pole

there are others, but those are the ones that matter.

Re: I'm not sure they want it there....

Feb 28, 2014, 10:39 AM

The Lt Governor wants it there- actually prefers it on the state house dome.

I've been in his office several times- it's full of them.

but in this case- not being willing to do anything about - while not the same thing- is just as good as not wanting to move it.

Feb 28, 2014, 11:09 AM

He is a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and will vigiorously oppose any attempts to have the flag relocated from its present position on the State House grounds.

I just don't think that position is in the best interest of our state as a whole.

Read closely please - at least try it.

The Governor in South Carolina can't lower the flag alone- and can't do much alone. That's not the way government works in South Carolina.

Columbia legislators are in Richland County- not Lexington County (Those are 2 different counties if you couldn't tell)- where plenty of Clemson folks live too - so it's also "Clemson Central" - but of course that wasn't the point or part of the discussion.

Columbia legislators as a delegation have wanted the flag down for years. The Mayors of Columbia have wanted it down for years. Columbia is a democratic city - not a republican city.

The issue with the flag....

Feb 28, 2014, 9:50 AM

stopped being about heritage v. racism or right v. wrong a long long long time ago.

The issue is now more about one side being ####-bent and determind to make sure the other side doesn't get its way, and it is that persistent, inflexible, inexorable approach that has cast such an unfavorable light on this state on a national level and, therein at least for me, lies the greatest area of concern.

Re: What do you mean?

Feb 28, 2014, 10:14 AM

There are certainly passionate views on both sides about displaying the flag on government property.

Supporters of displaying the flag focus on heritage and history, while opponents believe the 1962 decision to fly the flag was a racist response to integration.

I understand the isasues. My concern is the impact the ogoing issue is having on our state and what it has cost our state in terms of failed economic development efforts and lost tourism dollars.

Ok that makes some sense.

Feb 28, 2014, 10:23 AM

As far as economic losses, are you specifically referring to the ncaa tourny ban? Cause we still have a great tourism industry despite that stupid naacp ban crap.

In my mind setting aside my beliefs about my heritage, you don't give into a bully about something especially when it's none of their business imo. Sorta like how that aziz gov caved the other day to bullies

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Whatever you do, always give 100%.....unless it's donating blood

I am referring to ....

Feb 28, 2014, 10:37 AM

the total economic impact which includes the NCAA Tournament ban and all of the other events that no longer consider SC as a posible host site because of the flag issue.

The NBA and MLB used to play prerseason games in SC every year but will no longer do so becasue of the flag. The City of Charleston was being considered as a possible host site for a new football bowl game but the flag issue put a damper on that as well. There are other notable examples as well.

It just seems to me the confederate soldiers monument which, to my knowledge, does not include any dipcition of the confederate flag, is a more than fitting tribute to confederate heritage. The flag itself is an unnecessary addition.

Heck...even the SC monument at Gettysburg does not have a confederate flag on it and this is a hallowed site where men actually fought and died for their heritage and convictions.

It's not just people outside our state. It's a lot of people inside our state. Why can't you just fly the flag that represents your heritage on your own property since it's a flag never flew over the state of SC?

I've never understood the need to have it on the grounds. Why do you need it at the state house? Wouldn't you be able to see it better from your porch?
