Jimmy Addison

Aug 25, 2020, 10:43 AM

He was the quarterback that I remembered mostly while I was a student at Clemson. We had so-so record during those years but we usually won the ACC Championship. I have a cap that has the "C" as shown on the helmets. It is very attractive and of course, it was prior to the PAW. I would like to see the team wear this uniform and helmet in a game in the future. Go Tigers!

Was he the QB called THE NEEDLE?

They would say Jimmy Addison could thread the needle with the ball.

Jimmy Addison, "needle" because he was so thin? However

besides being a good ball handler, he could pass the ball really well. Unfortunately, during those times, the pass was not used very much. I remember him as very quick and athletic and could run well also.

Either Bill Goodrich or Jim Phillips labeled Addison with his nickname. But it nothing to do with his passing ability, instead it was his frame, the quote was " Jimmy is as skinny as a needle".

I thought Coach Howard was the one who coined that nickname!***

Not the year to do it financially, but would like to see this uniform for a homecoming weekend in the future.

I was in the same class with Jimmy and some of ny best friends and roommate were fraternity brothers with him. He was the "Needle" because he was around 6' tall and weighed about 150 lbs. or a few pounds more. Of course at that time our linemen weighed 230 at the most. I think that is what Harry Olszewski weighed.

TigerLinks, Wayne Mass was also on that team. He was 245 pounds and considered a giant. He was a Playboy All American and the largest lineman in the All American group.

Wasn't he in the "Deacs" - I lived in their dorm my first

semester until they moved in new pledges for 2nd semester. Moved to the same hall in D tin cans as Wayne Mass for 2nd semester.

Harry might have played at 235. Harry and I were in a history class together, and he was checking out my paper during a test. Bad move, Harry, I hadn’t studied for it either. Even so, it probably helped him some.

I recall seeing him play. He was solid. And he was a lot closer to 140 than to 160!

I know a Converse girl who dated Addison. She's still cute! No, really. And she likes it when I call her a "Converse girl".

was the only player smaller than I was when I got to Clemson

This is "The Needle" and uniform of which you speak:
