The national spelling bee

May 31, 2018, 9:49 PM

Is undergoing its annual siege by Indian-Americans. 7 of the final 8 are of Indian descent. They have been winning it for a long time but in recent years it's been 90% if the final 20.

Serious question. Why is this event so thoroughly dominated by this 1 specific (and fairly small in the USA) demographic every single year? It's an interesting phenomenon

education, and their parents insist they work hard in school.

Succinctly: their culture is evolving while the European American culture has been devolving for some time now.

They also have long, often complicated names.

That's gotta help somehow.

Or it's the shoes.

It's gotta be the shoes.

Agree 100%. It’s parent involvement pushing them to achieve. My mom did the same with my brother and sister. Come home from school, have a snack, then do all of your homework before going outside to play or watch tv.

interestingly it seems to be regional too

The final 3 this year were all from the Dallas area and that area has produced winners in the past too. Spelling hot bed

Just curious, which other ethnicities have good memories? Which don't?

also has to do with learning to spell and pronounce historic and or current Native American Tribes/ places/ names/ etc. I assume much of that history is part of reservation school curriculum.

Look like Mumbai. My son graduated 22nd in a class of 465 but he was the highest anglo. These kids are incredible, they go to school, then go to Kumon, then go home and study, then eat, then play for about 30 minutes, then study more. No such thing as XBOX time for these grinders. Gotta respect em though.

Re: The national spelling bee

Spelling Bees are a hobby in parts of the Indian community.

Most kids could do this too if they spent as many hours memorizing spelling words as they do practicing basketball/baseball/whatever.

The #### knowledge they memorize to get to this level is sad.

There are better uses for anyone's time and it just isn't fun to watch kids spell words that no one has ever seen/heard before.
