great being 26 years old (I'm 60 now).
But it was a different era with no "Final 4" polls and playoffs - had to hope someone in front of you would lose - we weren't #1 until after we beat Carolina - were the only undefeated team after that game (I think that's right) going into the bowls so when we beat Nebraska we kept the #1 spot and won the NC.

That is why Mark May has hated on us most of his ESPN career. He played for Pitt who was ranked #1 until they lost to Penn St. That week or week before our game with the coots. I remember giving anyone that wanted it 3 points and Nebraska. I was 30 at the time and was on site in Miami. The only game we didn't go to that year was the game with the coots. Go Tigers!!!!!

we faced a huge road game against a highly ranked UNC team while just coming off a performance that made us look invincible.
Did we have a "let-down"? Hard to say for sure, but we certainly got taken to the absolute wire by the Heels.
This year, we faced NC State on the road after our historic performance vs Miami and hopefully got our "let-down" game out of our systems.
After being tested in Raleigh, I think our minds (fans and players) are now in exactly the right place for the task at hand in DV this Saturday.
Go Tigers. Beat the Noles!!

Yeah we missed a couple extra points. I think everybody played except the punter.

I was at the rally that Thursday night at the Amphitheater!

Campus was electric! Team, coach, cheerleaders, were there but the Tiger was missing for the start. I later learned that the Tiger (Ricky Capps) was on the way to the rally and had a slight accident. He had been wearing a Superman cape that season with his tiger suit as the Superman movie was a big hit at the theaters. He was on his motor cycle on the way to the rally when the cape got caught in the rear spokes, and threw him off in some bushes! He showed up with some broke ribs I think, but acted like nothing had happen.
It was a magical time to be a student at Clemson!

It was glorious! Just as it is now. However, at 10 years of age, I never worried about us losing. Now I am sharing the same awesome experience with my 17 and 10 year old boys, and they are the ones telling me to chill out.

Then there were less games on tv. Most of our information came from newspapers so besides records and some stats we had very little information about our next opponent. A lot of unknowns from a fan perspective going into each game. I was at all home games and a few away games that year as it was my senior year and I wanted to be at as many games as possible. I remember listening to NC game on the radio and got to go to Miami for the bowl. Great memories

I remember actually feeling a little sorry for Wake Forest and wishing we could have saved some of those points for the Tar Heels.

I was pretty young, but you have to know, we didn't know what to think of it ourselves. We were still in the mindset that going to a bowl game was a big deal and we were entering into uncharted territory at the time. Besides, we had been filled for years and years on Penn St, SoCal, ND, Bama and the programs which were then so big. A national Championship for Clemson? It was a little difficult to imagine. However, I do recall the WF score and thinking Clemson must be an unstoppable force. Also, the D had not allowed a touchdown for the first several games which added to the sense of growing awareness. It was a good time to be a Clemson fan.
