Help settle a wager, Tneters who attended Clemson ‘73-‘77

Feb 7, 2021, 9:18 AM

Do you remember the band, America, performing in concert at Littlejohn?

On a side note, what concerts did you attend? My favorite was a free concert in the Ampitheater by Flatt and Scruggs.

Yes to America.

Remember Flatt and Scruggs also-pretty cool.

My favorite concert at Clemson was Leon Russell.

Not a singing group, but I loved the Bob Hope visit

Feb 7, 2021, 9:42 AM

in the early 80s. Red Skelton came with him too.
One funny story I remember Hope telling was when
he was talking about our PK Donald Igwebuike. He
said that after Danny Ford had the Clemson offense
run the ball up the middle 3 straight times, he'd
say "alright Iggy, go in and kick the piggy". Guess
you had to be there.

About that Red Skelton visit...

Feb 7, 2021, 11:36 AM

... I was taking an English class, "American Humor," at the time, and we jokingly asked the professor -- Steadman, perhaps? -- to see if he could get Red to visit the class. He said he would "see what he could do." Well, the prof came through. Mr. Skelton indeed came to our very small class and held forth for a good part of the class, talking about his life, his successes, his rules for living, just amazing stuff. One of the many highlights of my time at Clemson.

What year was that? I remember Bob Hope at Littlejohn. Red is one of my very favorite comedians! I remember Leon and F&S but not America. Graduated Dec '73.

Re: About that Red Skelton visit...

Feb 8, 2021, 1:47 PM

Probably '82 or '83. I did not recall Hope and Skelton appearing at the same time, as someone suggested, but it's possible. Bill Cosby also made an appearance about that time.

Rode the elevator at the Clemson house with Bob Hope and his wife probably in '74. Too in awe to say a word.
Went to many concerts but I don't remember America.

not clemson concert related,

Feb 7, 2021, 6:36 PM

but I was at a festival and ended up having a full fledged conversation with the drummer from three days grace. didn't even know who he was until my buddy came up and started acting like a fan girl lol. cool dude, he was just out in the crowd watching other bands after their set. But I have noticed that most rock musicians are pretty chill. they aren't divas like pop musicians

Interesting, Smiling Tiger, that America performed in Greenville and Columbia in ‘75. Maybe Hubby went to one of those. I do not remember seeing them at all. Maybe he went without me.

Doobie Brothers

Focus
Kenny Loggins
Chuck Berry
Lester Flat and Earl Scruggs

Great time to be at Clemson!!

Flatt and Scruggs broke up in 1969. The concert in the amphitheater was Lester Flatt and The Nashville Grass.

Well, you are probably correct. What I do remember is being blown away by the bluegrass music. The memories do get fuzzy hence the argument with Hubby about America performing in Littlejohn.

Re: Help settle a wager, Tneters who attended Clemson ‘73-‘77

Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass were great

Even greater was The Kings Own Choir, a long standing Mens a cappella choir from one of the Scandinavian countries. We went for extra credit in western civ class, and were blown away.

Not a concert, but a presentation by Mel Blanc. He was excellent.

I remember one afternoon, '74-ish, there were several performers along the sidewalk outside The Dorm. I particularly recall a Delta Blues act and an elderly old school blues performer who did some old school dancing, he reminded me of Bill Robinson (Bojangles). I nearly skipped chem lab to stay and watch more.

We were afforded some great free, or nearly free, entertainment. Good times.

Tigered6®According to the list of all America concerts played in the 1970's (listed earlier), America played nearby in 1975 (approximately 30 miles away): "Aug 14, Memorial Auditorium, Greenville, SC (with Poco)"

There are some inaccuracies on that list. I saw them in Charlotte with Poco in 75-76 and zI know they played Chapel Hill and font see either. They did play Aug 14, Memorial Auditorium, Greenville, SC (with Poco) and Aug 15 Columbia in 1975 per the list
