Hate to admit it, but teams like FSU and Alabama

Apr 13, 2015, 3:49 PM

not loading up their nonconference schedules (and in Bama's case, not having a non-conference power 5 rival) are getting to championship games. I admire the fact that we play tougher teams, however
there aren't any special titles or trophies for that. Not much margin for error in college football if you want to compete in title games of any kind.

we beat FSU and SCAR every year and everything else

assuming we will all our other conference games, is irrelevant win or lose

We can't really trust SCAR to keep being

an eye opening win and we can't trust any ACC school but FSU to help with a game to create national buzz. The brand is still building. Go out and win the ACC a few times in a row and they become less important.

Short sighted mentality. Schedule easier opponents like most SEC teams do and it is easier to win the tougher games. Same for FSU. They don't generally play Ga. Tech every year as a rivalry game and don't have to deal with cut blocks and the unconventional offense. Clemson has a better chance of winning it all if it doesn't schedule Auburn, Georgia, Texas A&M, etc. like teams every year If we lose to one of those teams and beat FSU and USuc and we still may be left out.

competitive programs were scheduling like we were, then it would be one thing. But even some programs with rosters full of top talent are still cutting corners to help get themselves there.
Those programs are going to continue to find ways to have even more advantages, unfortunately.

They're scheduling easier games because those are the teams that don't demand a home and home series. The same economic issues that stop us from scheduling UGa every year stop them as well. If that's the only top tier team you want to play, it will work. Otherwise, you've got to rotate that top tier team.

We just need to beat FSU***

How'd they do when they got to the play-offs?

The only year there's been a playoff.

Don't you remember that whole deal? How the SEC got embarrassed in the inaugural playoff?

Summa cum laude. Magna cum laude. The radio’s too loudy.

Re: FSU maybe a diff story

Apr 13, 2015, 4:12 PM

I agree with a lot of the SEC schools, but FSU's schedule usually resembles the one here at Clemson. They have an instate SEC rival just like Clemson, and they typically have another quality nonconf team as well. Heck last year they had 2 of em. OK state and Notre Dame.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

FSU has never been afraid to play anyone

Apr 13, 2015, 4:19 PM

our schedule has looked a little tougher in recent years because the coots have had a decent team. They are heading right back to where they belong and our ooc schedule will reflect that.

With the exception of OU a few years ago, FSU's schedules

Apr 15, 2015, 1:02 PM

have been a little light. And UF hasn't been anywhere close to what they used to be since Meyer left years ago.

The post you link to says the opposite - that you need

Apr 13, 2015, 4:28 PM

to have a decent non-conference schedule.

What the ESPN blogger should have said, but isn't allowed to because it is sEcPSN is that:
* If you are in the SEC you are automatically deemed to play a tough schedule (until the Mississippi's of the world are exposed but by then it's too late) so you don't need any Power 5 out of conference games.

* If you are outside the SEC and play some cream puffs close but win, you're damaged goods - see FlaState

Good point....but I'll feel more comfortable when we don't play the App.States and Woffords of the world. Trade them for Miss. State, Mich. State, Nebraska, Bama.....any of them.

Until some other

ACC teams (Louisville, Pitt, BC, step up a notch, we will need to schedule an extra outside conference game vs. a quality team (example Auburn in 2016).

It was just an observation. I enjoy those games, but it's

Apr 15, 2015, 1:06 PM

almost denial to believe we will get to a title game without being undefeated.
Possible, maybe, but not likely.

And no matter how good those teams could possible be, you know the money hording media will never allow itself to really spotlight those programs, if they were. Not enough money in it.
