What this early rule allowed was for the eligible receivers to wear a different color helmet than other players on the team. For instance, a tiger receiver could wear a purple helmet while the other players wore a white one. You never see this in today’s game and I suspect the rule has been changed.

with TEs sometimes covered and sometimes not covered. They could be eligible on one play and not on the next. It would also be confusing on tackle-eligible plays.
