There's a blend. Had a roommate in college who barely kept up with the NFL, let his team be autodrafted and didn't really check it all season. It just happened to be 2007 and he had Tom Brady and Randy Moss (16-0 season), Adrian Peterson (rookie season), and Edgerrin James, so he won the league. That's rare though. There's obviously a lot of luck, but if you don't know what you're doing, you'll rarely be set up to get any benefit from said luck.
