Coots are a useless game bird not even worth shooting.

All I can figure is that Coots started referring to us as taters because they were once told that Clemson was northwest of them and they thought we were in Idaho. They were never good at geography.

3. Seeing how the USC football sucks so consistently, it seems rather offending to good poultry everywhere to call them Gamecocks, so a "coot" is a much more realistic symbol for such an inept football program.
