Small Ball Wins the Day

Jun 2, 2018, 6:57 AM

I saw Monte Lee's statement on how Clemson is built as a slugging team and not for small ball, yet when the odds to win the game via small ball presented itself, small ball was how he played it. That was a textbook situation to bunt the runner over and to get the slap single to score him. The setup and execution was perfect. It's proof that while it's fine to recruit and teach the long ball for offense, every player should be able to bunt, hit the ball where it's pitched and run the bases with speed and good judgement. There is a time when a small ball attack is king and that was the time for it.

Well done, fellas!

Yes, you have to take what the games give you.***

Yes, well said. I can’t remember when small ball was not instrumental in winning it all at the cws.

100% Agree, but think the batter made the decision for him**

""Cromwell"" has been in a hitting slump, _ he is a senior,_ and he has made a few crucial bunts in games past __ had the batter been one of our lead-off four, I wonder if Monte would have made the call ????

Either way,I'm just glad it worked out and we won !!!!! See yall tonight, GO TIGERS !!!!!

I don't think the batter had anything to do with the decision. In the bottom of the inning, one run does it - game over. You absolutely cannot risk hitting into a double-play and losing the runner on-base. The best odds with no outs is to advance the runner - even sacrificing the second potential runner via a bunt or deep flyball - but the best odds are via the bunt. There was no need for a power hitter at that point. The game depended on advancing the runner to scoring position and then putting one hit over or through the infield.

I just hope we can make that decision more often - and not just at the end of a game. The game of baseball is a game of dynamic situation and the correct strategy can change from long ball to small ball and back and forth many times during a game.

I think he bunts with everybody except Beer,Davidson and Williams.
Cromwell being at the plate made it a whole lot easier decision.

>>I think he bunts with everybody except Beer,Davidson and Williams.<<

If he had, he would have made the wrong decision, imo. In fact, I think Beer went down looking on his last at bat and any of the three could have hit into a double play or popped up to shallow outfield, failing to move the runner.

He would not have bunted Beer for sure maybe Logan or Williams.
But yeah if was def the right move especially with Cromwell at the dish

Cromwell needed to contribute something @ the plate

Jun 2, 2018, 1:50 PM

He is somthing like 2 for his last 50+ at bats.

Small ball? Maybe.

A “seeing-eye” flare, a sac bunt by a guy who couldn’t buy a hit, and redemption for a “blind squirrel” ... !

Just win!!!
