Your right....and they're called "Veterans Day and Memorial Day".

The actual fighting lasted from 1775 to 1783.

Independence Day is an appreciation of the goals for our country we set out in the Declaration of Independence to inform the British that we were leaving their sorry colonial rule.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

That is the ideal we celebrate on the 4th of July.

This isn't meant to be an anti-military post, because I am very pro-military and appreciate those who serve, but what has the military done, or what conflict has it participated in, say the last 60 years, that has contributed to our "freedom"? In the last number of decades it has helped our national interests and has helped to protect well-being, but I wouldn't say it has had anything to do with our freedom. Perhaps freedom in other countries, but our freedom has been well established for longer than any of us has been alive.

That is an interesting point. We all grew up with the knowledge of the incredible accomplishments and consequences of WWII. A very clear distinction between good and evil.

Things began to get cloudy after that. We transported the French back into Indo-China (Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand) in order for them to retain their colonial 'rights'. We supported them with troops but they were kicked out following the Battle of Dien Ben Phu in 1954. We started sending advisors then. We weren't fighting for our 'freedom', but rather the reimposition of colonial rule by the French. We then took over their role and the Vietnam War began in earnest. Still, we weren't fighting for our freedom, but the freedom of the vietnamese and prevent the 'spread' of commmunism. We all know how that story ended.

Fast forward to Afghanistan...another clear example of good vs evil. We were attacked and we had every right and an obligation to go to war there. But we weren't attacked by Iraq and we weren't fighting for our freedom there. We're still there.

Our fighting men swear an oath to defend us. They are honorable and our greatest resource. But history shows that politicians have often misused our military for political and financial gain. That doesn't make our veterans any less noble or appreciated.

We throw the word 'freedom' around a lot, many time inferring we're the only ones who enjoy it. To date, there are 92 countries in the world who are 'free'.

Young men die in old men's wars. We as American's should be sceptical of calls for war by old men.

North Korea doesn't stand a chance in attacking the U.S., no matter the rhetoric we hear out of Washington. But the saber rattling has begun. Our "Strategic Patience toward N. Korea has come to an end' is the new rhetoric. The fact is that any missile the North Koreans could fire at the U.S. doesn't have the slightest chance to make it 5000 miles to hit the U.S. . That is a fact.

I'm not so sure about our involvement in Indo-China regarding "France's "colonial "right". We were not so interested in France keeping their colonial rights as we were as keeping us out of there. We knew if France left we would wind up there. Our history goes back to 1919 (or close to that date) when Ho Chi Minh tried to visit with Woodrow Wilson in Paris. Wilson refused to see him, From that point on we had some involvement there. The big fear was what China was going to do after WW II. You may know that we had delivered thousands of tons of war material to the French and our planes were flying about 90% of the re-supply missions into Dien Ben Phu.

Maybe we are saying the same thing, as I guess France being a colonial power was the only thing keeping them there.

freedom was Imperial Japan, Fascist Italy, and Nazi Germany during WW II. And the US mainland has went longer back than WW II from being attacked by another country

world war 2 was the last time you could make the case where our "freedom" was possibly in jeopardy. And even then, I mean the fighting never came close to the US shores except for pearl harbor (which Hawaii wasn't a state back then)
