I'm almost 32 years old and have never called the cops for anything, or encouraged anyone else to do the same. When seconds matter, the cops are only minutes away.
What if we didn't "defund" police, but if we just cut their budgets such that they didn't have the money to spend on paramilitary gear and equipment? Unless you're SWAT or ATF or Vice or whatever, M4 rifles and kevlar vests are just overkill.
I'm willing to take this risk if we can funnel those funds for MRAPS and military-grade weaponry and equipment to our public infrastructure that is woefully outdated compared to other wealthy countries and our school systems.
Would that really be extreme or far-fetched?

I see what you are saying, but this isn't a discussion we can have without talking about gun control in general. It's late on a Friday, and I don't think either of us wanted to spend the evening extrapolating on that. At least I don't.
I believe police have the right to defend themselves. Why they should have to defend themselves against assault weapons in rare cases is again, another argument.
Even removing that possibility, how long have cops been militarized in this way. What are the driving forces behind it?

Which is the reason I'm on the right when it comes to guns. The cops are always minutes away when a single woman is trying to protect herself from the 200lb man climbing in her window.
