Jounge Entrepreneurs...semi-sirrius question...

Aug 25, 2020, 10:22 AM

I have an idea that may fly regionally for a restaurant/food truck. It involves using historically southern foods in international cuisine.

I haven't been in food service since I worked at Shakey's Ye Olde Pizza House in 1977.

Any ideas on how to pursue this idea?

Step 1

Make plans to work 7 days a week and never spend any time with your family, and sell off any hobby equipment that you may own. Also, get a good radio for your food truck that will get Clemson games on Saturdays.

this is so true. My wife and I were in the final steps of linking up with a franchise (not food related) and then we were like, "what are we thinking?". My wife would have basically been a single mom on weekends and nights. Plus she would have to keep working to help support the business while we got up and running. It all sounded fun and awesome, but you have absolutely zero life for several years and then you are still hoping that it takes off.

But hey man, more power to you if you want to go after the dream.

You might want to reach out to this place and talk to the owner - it's a commercial kitchen that rents out space for food truck operators in Columbia. Might have some insights and suggestions on how to get started.

kinda hard to get in that space right now

Yes, there is demand, but so many restaurants have pivoted to food trucky type set ups, it'd be hard for now.

Also, gotta have the market for it - so gotta be near colleges, cities, or hospitals, which can mean you're in pricier areas.

Anyhoo, trying to be serious here. I would definitely call on commercial kitchens or just chat up a food truck owner. Lots to learn. I'd seriously look at profit margins and start up costs.

Here's the thing - the best food trucks/take out have a narrow niche. Just do a couple of items well. In a city, if you get buzz going, then you're off to the races.
