Let me preface this by saying that this did not happen to me. It happened to a friend. For serious.
Son is in 3rd grade. Mom gets an email from the son's teacher saying that the boy let out a "scared" yell when a black girl walked towards him in the hall. The email continues to say that this was a racist action because her son was afraid of the girl because of her skin color.
The mom asks the son and he explains that they were lined up in the hall and the boy in front of him farted and it smelled, so he yelled. It had nothing to do with the girl, and that the son didn't even know what girl they were talking about. Of course, the teacher assuming that the yell was a "scared yell" was complete BS.
Mom asked @SarahAdidas and I how to respond to the email last night. I told her that if the teacher didn't ask a question or solicit a response, then I would just ignore it. If she wanted some sort of reply, I would tell her that her assessment was wrong, using the same tone of her original email. SarahAdidas's original thought was to go all "put that teacher on blast and CC the principal on it and go thermal nuclear".
Just curious how you would handle a situation.

was wrong. No need to escalate unless she pushes the issue. If that happens, you nuclear, copy principal, demand apology, go to school with shirt off ready to fight, etc.

from what I hear, the teacher has had a hard-on for this kid all year. From the outside-looking in, this seems like a really good kid. Nice parents, etc. Mom says that the teacher emails them constantly about stuff that should just be handled in the classroom. I.E. your boy was tapping his foot today in class and I had to tell him to stop. When a dodge ball hit the teacher, your son giggled.
So, from the mom's perspective, the teacher is not very good.
Calmness is definitely the way to handle it. You have to consider that the son's education is the priority. Getting all thermo-nuclear won't do anything to help the son out.
As far as I know, it wasn't escalated beyond an email to the parent. No discipline or telling the principal was done.

Got called into a meeting (as the coach, not parent) because the kid took his shoes off in class.
My first response was "did his feet stink enough to be a distraction?"

I don't think the girl even made in issue of it, just a teacher reading WAY too much into a situation and not taking a second to look at the big picture.

Thank you so much for sharing your observations. I cannot tell you how much your efforts are appreciated, not just with my child but with all of the children you have the opportunity to impact on a daily basis.
My nine-year-old is not a racist. Nor is anyone else in our family. None of the aforementioned engage in racist behavior, actions, or the like.
I asked Johnny if he yelled in the hallway yesterday and he said he did. I asked him why. He said because the boy in front of him farted and it smelled really bad.
I hope you have a great day today and again appreciate all that you and your entire staff do for the future leaders of our community.

overly-PC world we live in, and a nice gesture would be to offer to take her on a fun visit to a wonderful hog farm owned by a kind and cooperative hog farmer way out in the country and nowhere near any type of law enforcement.

My son's reaction was because the child who scared him causing such an outburst was due to his fear of women. He was raped by a young black woman who was hired to babysit him many years ago. His mental health workers says it might take hypnosis to help him remember the details but we have the film on our nanny cam.
According to the boy's doctor it is best if we all back off and let the kid heal with the guidance of his doctors rather than traumatize him again by accusing him of being racist.
We expect your full cooperation on this matter and will contact your superiors if you trigger another mental breakdown by oppressing our child in any manner. At some point we intend to seek legal advice on how to proceed to deal with your extreme insensitivity to our child's special needs.

My teacher in 3rd grade thought I cussed so she berated me in front of the whole class, made me cry, and sent me outside to come yell at me some more, and gave me detention. Little did I know she thought I cussed - I didn't know what I had done exactly. She didn't call my parents so there was no one to defend me. This is that parent's opportunity to correct the record. If not.... they could end up like me.... MENTALLY INSANE
