Petrino really made a mistake spiking it on 3rd down. They had 30 seconds, plenty of time to call a quick pass play and still have 4th down.

They didn't even need to rush. Could have took 20 seconds to call a play, and 8 seconds to run the play (their last play took 6) and still had 2 seconds left. Thank you Petrino for saving my heart from another stressful play.

Petrino didn't call a spike. Gardner did that on his own. We lost the game on the play before with the idiotic run up the middle. Oh well.

Turns out he had a super-dooper, extra-sneaky, ultra-private, game-ending trick play.
Petrino's problem started when Venables googled "Petrino's super-dooper extra-sneaky ultra-private game-ending trick play," and only one play popped up.
