According to the Seneca Journal...........

Dec 18, 2019, 9:39 PM

alcohol sales at the Gamecock's athletic venues will occur only on Tuesdays according to the following quote from today's issue. Proper sentence structure does not appear to be a requirement of writers for the Journal.

"South Carolina's Board of Trustees granted approval for the sale of alcoholic beverages in the school's athletic venues on Tuesday".

Joe, you and Bill probably remember Dr. Louis Henry,

Dec 19, 2019, 5:55 AM

longtime English professor at Clemson who was the advisor to "The Tiger" student newspaper.

During my time on staff, including my junior year as the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Henry rarely intervened in newspaper affairs but was meticulous about grammar in his journalism course. No doubt, he would be appalled with today's versions, many of which exhibit either a lack of knowledge, a lack of care or a lack of proper editing, including proofreading.

As I reflect, I remain amazed that a group of students without formal training was able to produce the paper, including meticulous attention to detail, that resulted in consecutive All-American Awards, naming "The Tiger," as one of the top 25 collegiate papers in the nation. That attention to detail included multiple layers of editing and proofreading before copy was published...the apparent lack of which today is stunning.

Do you recall what your most great breaking hard hitting story was? Anything of major interest? I never read that paper. Just wondering though..

You missed out. I always enjoyed reading The Tiger. Only thing better was the once yearly satirical episode, “The Buzzard”. Seriously funny issue.

I was a student during the Tates Locke years

I remember an "ad" in the Buzzard for Trader Tates' Used Monte Carlos. Funny stuff.

My favorite at Clemson. I used to chuckle at the 'sigh/pause' before he would say something. He loved Tiger baseball...I spent many an afternoon sitting in the stands chomping on roasted peanuts, watching the games. He would always hold a preseason cookout for the baseball team at his 'Walden Pond' cabin! Great memories...wonderful man!

Regarding grammar...I still hear him today! Meticulous is right!

Yes. I knew Louis well. During his last two or three years he had to use a portable oxygen tank.

I don't recall who the Editor of The Tiger was at that time but he attended Clemson UMC and sang in the choir. We had an Associate Minister who was quite liberal. One Sunday the Associate Minister's sermon was sprinkled with liberal ideas. In the next issue of The Tiger, in the editorial was the statement that went something like this, "It appears to me the new morality was formally the old immorality". He hit the nail dead center.

A tip of the hat to Dr Henry, but I believe you meant to say "was formerly the old immorality."
