Jim Phillips

Oct 3, 2018, 6:17 PM

I remember listening to him out chopping wood or feeding animals, he really brought the game to me. I use to turn off the sound on the TV later on in life to hear him call it. He was Clemson. He was the Voice of Clemson. My dad hated football. And if I ever snuck in to watch a game he’d find me and get me outside. I miss jim. He told me about my passion. Since Charlie Pell was coach. He was the voice that always told me how my Tigers were doing.
For Jim Phillips GO TIGERS!!!!!!

Just wish he could have called the second one. That would have been awesome. He would love Dabo.

It's a shame but if I remember he didn't call 1st either

Oct 3, 2018, 6:46 PM

I thought I saw somewhere that back then networks owned all rights including radio broadcast and he wasn't able to call it

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He didn't. Mutual Radio had exclusive rights

Oct 4, 2018, 10:41 AM

to the Orange Bowl then. Most nervous he ever was during a game, as he did not have his normal emotional outlet, calling the game

He was just gone.

I know he didn't have a 4-year college degree, but I........

Oct 3, 2018, 6:30 PM

still feel an exception should be made for him to be in the ROH. He was THE Voice of the Tigers for over 25 years - every sport, every game, every location, etc.

We'll never have another Voice of the Tigers like him. He WAS Clemson sports on the radio.

He really loved Clemson. I remember him getting mad at Tommy West like he was his father. He had a great relationship with Howard also. I use to love hearing Frank talk. He was a living legend.

The fact that he is not already in the R.O.H. is a disgrace. If a piece of paper is truly the reason he has not yet been enshrined, for the love of humanity, award him a posthumous honorary degree and put the man where he belongs. He is a significant figure in Clemson football lore.

I saw a video, are you a bandwagon Clemson fan? Being honest I couldn’t answer 2 questions. One was about Treadwell the other Raymond, but both were that’s right moments. I just feel like if you haven’t heard of Jim Phillips or heard frank Howard talk? Your missing the best part of Clemson football.

I remember when he came here from Ohio. Guy before him was Bill Goodrich who often would say “woo-hoo mercy!” Met Jim at a party one time. Was a fun man with great stories. Loved his game calls. Don tries hard and has improved but Jim will be hard to surpass.

no way to repair the aorta. He knew he had the aneurysm, never told us. Where it was there was a 1 in 4 chance he'd survive a surgery to attempt to repair it ahead of time, so he just rode it out and enjoyed life up to the end

Oct 4, 2018, 10:09 AM

Thanks for that, Jim had such an iconic voice and radio presence! My dad has always been a huge deer hunter, and he loved to hunt in the mountains around Long Creek and Mountain Rest. I vividly remember riding down the road in my dad's work van and listening to Jim while we sipped on ice cold apple cider. Jim could always put you right there beside him at Wake Forest, Virginia, NC State, and of course DV. Greatly missed in all our hearts!

I recall how profoundly shocked I was from the news of his passing. "Dandy" Don doesn't hold a candle to Jim Phillips and unfortunately the younger fans won't ever the chance to appreciate the legacy of the Voice of the Tigers!

Miss him every season that passes, especially because he made games come alive in his own unique style.

Go Tigers!
