Vietnam - Salt and Pepper

Apr 11, 2021, 8:08 AM

No.... not entertainers or table staples, but a reported danger to the trusting. Once, when our Company moved into a new area, we were warned to be on the watch for two American soldiers who had either defected or who had been captured and agreed to assist the VC in tricking our soldiers into deadly ambushes. One guy was described as being white of average build and the other was reportedly a muscular black guy. We were told that they would appear to our troops yelling for help, drawing them into easy range for completely unexpected ambushes. We never knew if this was really true and never encountered them. But, about four years later, as I was completing my Master's Degree at Winthrop, you had better believe that I sat in the student center watching the live televised return of POWs like John McCain as they got off the planes.I wanted to see if there were 2 guys fitting their description who might have looked healthier than the others, pretending to be heroes returning home after helping the enemy. Never saw anyone that might have been them - if they were fact instead of fiction, I hope they were either blown away in an airstrike or that they are still over there and miserable in their decision to betray their fellow Americans.

Today, there are people that would give them a medal. Sad.***

Jane Fonda and John Kerry would gladly pin it on them.***
