So, how often has it really happened?

Sep 30, 2019, 12:53 PM

Talk of App State beating UNC got me doing a Googly search about FCS teams beating FBS teams. Now, that game did not apply, since App State has been FBS since 2014. But, turns out it has happened quite a lot, with the losers being mostly unknown FBS teams. But, five times in history, FCS teams have snuck up on RANKED FBS teams. Here they are:

1983: Cinncinatti 14 No.20 Penn State 3
2007: Appalachian State 34 No. 5 Michigan 32
2010: James Madison 21 No. 13 Virginia Tech 16
2013: Eastern Washington 49 No.25 Oregon State 46
2016: North Dakota State 23 No. 13 Iowa 21

Other close to home notable unranked times

1978: Umass 27-BC 0
1979: Florida A&M 16 Miami 13
1979: Presbyterian 21 Citadel 13
1979: Presbyterian 17 Furman 10 (The Blue Hose must have been pretty good that year!)
1982: Furman 28 South Carolina 23 (But Howwwwww?)
1983: Furman 17 Georgia Tech 13
1983: Appalachian State 27 Wake Forest 25
1984: Furman 34 NC State 30
1985: Furman 42 NC State 20 (Two years in a row!)
1985: Richmond 24 Virginia 14
1986: William and Mary 41 Virginia 37
1987: East Tenn. State 29 NC State 14
1989: Appalachian State 15 Wake Forest 10
1990: Citadel 38 South Carolina 35 (But Howwwww?)
1991: Appalachian State 17 Wake Forest 3 (About now, Wake don't want no more App State!)
1995: Appalachian State 24 Wake Forest 22
1998: Appalachian State 30 Wake Forest 27
1999: Furman 28 North Carolina 3
2000: Appalachian State 20 Wake Forest 16
2005: UCDavis 20 Stanford 17
2006: Richmond 13 Duke 0
2009: William and Mary 26 Virginia 14
2009: Richmond 24 Duke 16
2011: Richmond 23 Duke 21
2012: Youngstown State 31 Pitt 17
2013 Georgia Southern 26 Florida 20
2015: Citadel 23 South Carolina 22 (But Howwwww?)
2016: Richmond 37 Virginia 20
2019: Citadel 27 Georgia Tech 24

From the above, I conclude that Duke for shore don't want none of Richmond, Wake Forest CLEARLY don't want none of App State, and South Carolina don't want none of ANY SCHOOL IN THE STATE! :)

Can't remember the exact year

but App State also beat South Carolina in the mid-70s. I was at the game and App won like 39 to 35. Something like that.

Add that one to the Coots distinguished football history.....

It was 1975

What also gets lost is several near misses of upsets like that. One notable was last year, where App St almost upset a 10th ranked Penn St. Lost to Penn St in OT.

App State has upset, or nearly upset teams so many years

Sep 30, 2019, 5:09 PM

it's hard to consider it an upset anymore when it happens.

Thanks for posting.

The one school that underperforms whenever they play the Fighting Chickens is their little cousins from Conway.

Turns out that when the big Fighting Chickens fight the little Fighting Chickens, there really isn't much of a fight.

It always disappoints me. Even now that Coastal is FBS, they don't give the Gamecocks any trouble.
