Is college football teetering dangerously close to

Aug 3, 2020, 1:23 PM

alienating and losing a tremendous portion of its fans?

I read stuff like this pac-12 players' demands and i think if it (college football) gets ANYWHERE close to that i'm out. I LOVE college football. But make no mistake, I do draw lines.

Yep, time to start talking with our wallets. These young folks seem to have no appreciation for the folks that provide those scholarships they receive. Hate it, but I can find other things to do on a Saturday.

Ditto. I already did this with the NFL. Have not watched a game (except SB) in many years. And, TBH it is so nice to not clog up a Sunday with 8 hrs of football. It's a silly way to spend time, and most of us are doing it without our spouses and kids.

I believe I can translate that to Saturdays as well.

Short answer--yes.

The symbolism of a black ball knocking down white pins would be sure to draw social commentary from all sides.

but this is amateur college sports. the purest expression of education, pride and enjoyment. It does not need fans. MAYBE 10,000 seats behind the Y. Fans are only important to *professional* money dependent leagues.

While the thought of not watching my Tigers play makes me sad, if some of the demands are met I could see myself losing interest. Mind you some of the asks are completely fair.

My family would jump for joy to not have me glued to the TV all day on fall Saturdays as my wife cannot stand college football at this point due to my Clemson football obsession.

It would probably due my heart good not to have the fall stress that I have on Saturdays in the fall either. That poor muscle has been ran through the ringer watching Tiger football over the years.

No

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes it s. I'm as big a fan as there is and I can't remember

Aug 3, 2020, 1:54 PM

a time where I where I would just like to see it go away. I'm almost at that point now. Glad I got to feel what it was like to dominate the last 5 years. Three natties, I'm good to go.

Re: Is college football teetering dangerously close to

Aug 3, 2020, 2:04 PM

I don't know if we are to that point of alienating ,or losing the entire fan base, but there are signs that college football is headed toward dangerous times.
Just look at the cost of ticket prices. 2014 was the last season my family went because of the increase in IPTAY donations, losing a parking space we had for 2 decades,or more, and of course higher ticket prices.
What used to cost us about 900 dollars total topped 1200 at that year and that was more than we could afford,or justify.
Just saying.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very true. They say they want to fill the stadiums again,

Aug 3, 2020, 2:09 PM

well supply and demand indicates they need to drop prices. I'm not just talking about Clemson, I'm talking college football in general.

These athletes had better consider where their desires will get them. To be in a union, the IRS will consider all benefits received while playing as income and require taxes. You think they are complaining now, wait till they get the tax bill. Oh, they will need to be considered professionals, therefore they can not play in college. CFB will start to look like the Ivy league with no athletic scholarships. We will have to go back to something like the old SAT 800 rule. That will cut down the number of athletes available to play college sports.

I quit watching professional sports about 20 years ago

Aug 3, 2020, 2:14 PM

Just like most on here I have spent many dollars on college sports and Clemson. I am thankful for the great games and times with family and friends while doing so. However I can see it coming to a end with all of the demands, money etc. If things continue to go down the same track I can see many empty seats. In a nut shell we pay for these athletes to have a scholarship, would be a shame to see it come to a end, but most Americans won’t be bullied.

I really hate to say it but the newer generations are bullied all the time and take it. They are not allowed to think for themselves. They follow around these crazy ideas from people they don't even know like sheep going to slaughter

In this business as in others, you don't need to lose the majority of your customer base in order to sink your business model. Twenty or thirty percent can be devastating.

Programs winning at Clemson's clip may not be in immediate danger. Winning pastes over alot of problems. (Of course, nobody wins at Clemson's current level forever). But NC State fan or Miss St fan or Michigan St fan may begin to re-assess priorities pretty quickly.

Many of the adults who bankroll this whole deal are going to begin to consider other options for their leisure dollars. Woke kids will not (and cannot) replace those dollars.

IF college football goes away or is significantly

Aug 3, 2020, 2:18 PM

different going forward than what it was in the past 10 years... at least I can look back and say that Clemson won 3 national championships at the peak of collge football popularity and competitiveness.

The ShameCocks have won NOTHING, zip, zero, zilch.... brings a smile to my face

News from USuC...
"Richardson was the 20th Gamecock arrested since Spurrier was hired in Nov. 2004"

Fluxus®
"As I watched the game yesterday I couldn't help but feel crushed. We beat Furman by 4 TDs, but to me it looked like we got whipped."

"George Bush, we are reliably informed by the media, has the IQ of a moron, though how he matriculated from Yale and Harvard or flew an F-106 will remain an unexplained mystery. Doubtless his father bribed the airplane to fly itself."

One thing for sure

The longer fans are forced to be without college sports, the easier it we be for fans to give them up! The virus is something that no one can forget and it has caused some terrible delays that really can’t be blamed on the sports authorities. But, some of these other issues can be handled properly. The question is .., will they?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am not quitting Clemson Football.

Aug 3, 2020, 2:52 PM

Clemson Football needs a solid fan base now more than ever. I think the program is going to have to endure a really serious reduction in revenue and that will be hard on everyone. So now seems to be a particularly bad time for seriously loyal fans to walk away.

1. 400 guys on the west coast choosing now to use their position in sports boycotting for political, social and economic power is not going to make me even consider leaving Clemson football.

2. The current cost of Clemson football is not going to keep me away from the sport. South Carolina is a LOT richer place now than it has ever been. There is a beach house every on every 100 feet of sand from the NC border to the Ga border. The people I've seen at Clemson games for years have brought with them every possible sign and marker of great economic success. There are thousands of tailgates at every game with tents, banquets, generators, fans, big screen color TV set ups as they make 7 Saturdays a year a big family and friend holiday built around Clemson football. We've had luxury box seats for 40 years. We build more every year and those high dollar seats get grabbed up by Tiger fans with plenty of money to spend. It is too bad that the incomes of many people have not kept up with the growing economy, but college football was a luxury item in the 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s and 30s too. My family was not able to go to any games from the 30s through the 60s, but plenty of then rich or very local people could and did go. And they went to bowl games back then. And we still take 35,000 people back and forth across the country several times a year for the last five solid years. So money is not a problem for most fans who go to games in Death Valley.

3. Yes, the sport keeps changing. In the 60s when I started going, a great crowd was 30,000 people and we played in the ACC, a minor league. We were almost never on TV and certainly almost never in contention for prominence with elite national powers. We were closer to Furman and PC than to Alabama, Michigan and Southern Cal. And back then we were all white. Many of the best athletes in our home state went elsewhere for school and certainly elsewhere to play. The incorporation of the black citizens of our state into Clemson University and Clemson sport was a much bigger change than anything going on now. Yep, some white people walked away over the change brought by integration and I say good riddance to them. So change has been a constant in college football and in Clemson football forever.

4. Our athletes are now very well cared for and pampered beyond belief because of their skill. Clemson provides benefits to our players that look lavish to me. But back in the 60s a full ride to Clemson for a jock looked and was incredibly lavish. Now they have Dabo world. But 50 year ago when I went to school the jocks had their own cushy dorm and were treated like movie stars on our campus.

There has never been a time when Clemson football was better than it is right now. There has never been a time when Clemson University was as good a school as it is right now. There has never been a time when anything was better than it is right now.

Quitting Clemson over Covid or 400 guys on the west coast doing anything is crazy. Being mad because our own Clemson players are becoming more socially and politically active seems a bad move to me. Today our players are better students than they have ever been, conduct themselves better than players have every conducted themselves and represent Clemson better than most of us have ever represented Clemson.

I think fans who quit now do so because they are tied to an illusion that life was once better than it is now. I think they are wrong.

If someone needs to quit spending money on Clemson, they should do so immediately and I'll salute the effort, as would our coach. Faith, family and living right are the objectives most of us have for life, not football.

But for me, today, Clemson football is a wonderful part of my life and I am not a quitter.

Re: I am not quitting Clemson Football.

Some athletes think they are bigger than life. Let's face it, you can dribble a basketball, throw, catch, and kick a football, throw and hit a baseball, and kick a soccer ball. None of which is needed for a quality life. Many, many, many more professions are more important than this. If any athlete wants to show his a@@ and demand things, let him look for something else to do. My money will not support him any longer.

It isn’t a question of “walking away from” Clemson. It’s a question of losing the college game experience that fans have adapted to over the years. You’ll never see me walk away from Clemson in any capacity. Amateur sports need to stay just that. If you change that and bring professionalism into the college environment you will change the entire sports world. imo. I don’t want to see which teams can buy the best players and you don’t either. Do you?
