Weeding the garden dot netcomorg

Apr 30, 2018, 7:39 AM

Just in case any of y'all keep a garden, and do not enjoy pulling weeds, I thought I would share the weed proofing system that works for me:

After tilling / raking / fertilizing the soil I put down a layer of cardboard over the whole garden. Larger boxes work best - I get refrigerator boxes from the local appliance place. (Note: Try to find boxes with little to no tape, as the tape does not break down and is messy to clean up the next season.) Cardboard has to be replaced every year.

Then I cover the cardboard with weed fabric. Weed fabric alone does not block enough sunlight to prevent weeds, but it does manage to keep the sun from destroying the cardboard. If you buy the heavier duty woven fabric (not the plastic stuff) you can get 3 - 5 years use out of it.

Then I use a razor knife and cut holes in the cardboard where each plant will grow. This part takes longer than desired, but well worth the effort up front so I don't have to pull weeds or do any other maintenance for a whole year.

You serious Clark? Just pull them once a week and roll.

they have these things called 'grocery stores' where you can buy the delicious bounty from the gardens of others who do enjoy pulling weeds.

I discourage anyone who tries to put hoers out of business.

Apr 30, 2018, 7:49 AM

Shame on you. How you gonna chop the cotton and corn or cultivate with cardboard on the soil?

I tried a similar strategy with just weed fabric

Apr 30, 2018, 10:47 AM

weeds definitely grow underneath weed fabric. Also, this doesn't work well if you're planting stuff from seed like corn, beans or okra.

Ended up pulling up all of the weed fabric and I'll pull/hoe weeds again this year.

This seems easier

No mention of killing corn or tomatoes

So it should be safe!

This is much easier

Meet up with Celtic and hire some of his amigos. Pay ‘em based on number of weeds they pull.

Wut? Simple business transaction. :)

I've heard of similar results using newspaper. Might be easier to manage than corrugated cardboard. I've tried neither. Eff a garden. I don't need anything else to worry about right now.

That's about where I am, thought about getting some

Apr 30, 2018, 11:55 AM [ in reply to Re: Weeding the garden dot netcomorg ]

tomatoes or okra this year, but I remember all of the hot afternoons spent tilling, pulling weeds and picking ripe stuff...Can't get enthusiastic about doing it again. Kathy's produce is pretty close, they have fresh stuff, then I can go to the lake and not worry about it.
