After listening to Trump, one thing's for sure . . .

I listened to his whole speech...

Feb 9, 2016, 10:32 PM

while it may have been delivered well by his standards, the content was certainly not "good".

That is unless you're a member of the "entitled class" (play on his billionaire class BS)...then I guess it was great.

Free healthcare
Free college tuition
$15 min wage

And we're going to make "Wall Street" pay for it!

So how does ,

free college work. Will the "government" just send Clemson a check for all expenses or do they just reimburse the students directly? Seems like just sending one check to Clemson would be easier.

Maybe we're just K-16 now instead of K-12.

He also said public colleges would be "free". What about Furman? How do they get paid?

When I was enrolled in a state university in the 80s,

Feb 10, 2016, 8:09 AM

Virginia covered about 45% of tuition. Now VA covers about 8%. Percentages aside, the prices charged for college has gone up many multiples of the inflation rate, while enrollments have soared. You would think higher head counts would help out with the fixed costs of running an institution. Meanwhile, the quality of education has dropped. Many classes are taught by TA's or contract adjunct faculty. In my small, middling state school in the 80's I had one TA led course - Psych 111 - in my entire four years.

There is a lot that can be done to cut costs. It is a wholesale rip off at present.

the process for borrowing money for school....

Feb 10, 2016, 9:06 AM [ in reply to When I was enrolled in a state university in the 80s, ]

Is multiple times easier as well. For the most part, you can borrow as much as you want. Paying it back? Well we'll worry about that bridges when we cross it. I believe this is the biggest contributor to the cost of education.
