Chuck Yeager, World War II ace and first pilot to break sound barrier, has died at age 97
The World War II Air Force fighter pilot ace showed he had the "right stuff" when in 1947 he became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound.

My dad had the pleasure of knowing him many years ago. Said he was a great guy. RIP General!

crashing referred to as "Augering In." Must be an inside joke among pilots. I guess it refers to a plane spiraling down as it crashes.

The test pilots, the pioneering astronauts, the WW2 veterans. Leaders, risk takers, patriots. We still have some men like that today, but not like back then when everything was so new and uncertain and they lived under the shadow of the Soviet Union and the potential of nuclear war. Sad to see them go....
