ESPN Recruiting Job Rankings - Clemson #13

Dec 9, 2015, 6:52 PM

Below is the criteria used for ranking and then Clemson and Scar's individual breakdown. Now, before you read this, be aware that it is utterly meaningless. Check out 'Next Level Considerations' for Clemson and Scar. We have more people drafted since 2010 and yet, have a lower point score for that category. Thus, these rankings are all garbage. Not because we were ranked lower in one category, but because ESPN can't seem to follow their own rules.

ESPN's definition of the rankings:

Recruiting Nation's experts ranked all 65 Power 5 jobs by ease of recruiting, weighing five factors that contribute to the procurement of recruits (see box at right). The idea was to evaluate each job, as Richt did at Miami and his successor, Kirby Smart, had to before signing on at Georgia, as essentially a blank canvas. Our experts were instructed to discount the presence of an iconic coach (so no "Alabama is a great recruiting job because Nick Saban is a monster recruiter") or an attractive scheme (so no "Baylor is an attractive recruiting job because Art Briles runs a fun scheme") in making their determinations.

Clemson ranks 13th nationally:

Clemson Tigers: 21 out of 25

Favorable geography/local recruiting territory: 5 -- Since 2006, there have been 442 Power 5 signees from the state of South Carolina. Neighboring states of Georgia and North Carolina are among the best NFL producers per capita as well. Florida and Virginia are also states within short flying distance that are heavily recruited by the Tigers.

Recruiting/football budget: 4 -- At over $617,000 in 2013, when the most recent data was collected, the Tigers have the budget to regularly recruit up and down the Atlantic Coast, throughout the Southeast region and into Texas. They are becoming a national presence under Dabo Swinney.

Facilities to attract recruits: 4 -- Clemson has facilities that can compete with any program, save Alabama. Memorial Stadium is widely considered one of the very best game day atmospheres and touching “Howard’s Rock” and running down the hill to enter games is a major recruiting tool.

Next-level considerations: 4 -- The Tigers have had 29 players drafted since 2010, including five first-round selections. Sammy Watkins is an identifiable player who many national prospects know.

Other intangibles: 3 -- While Clemson hasn’t won a national championship since 1981, and last won the ACC title in 2011, the Tigers have been a consistent Top 25 program since 2000, winning 136 games with nine Top 25 AP Poll finishes. Wins over Florida State, Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oklahoma in recent seasons have raised Clemson’s recruiting profile nationally.

Scar ranks 34th nationally:

South Carolina Gamecocks: 16 out of 25

Favorable geography/local recruiting territory: 3 -- The state of South Carolina has produced 442 Power 5 conference signees since 2006. The Gamecocks, however, have to compete with in-state power Clemson and schools from neighboring states, like North Carolina and Georgia, for recruits.

Recruiting/football budget: 2 -- $302k according to the latest data. South Carolina’s recruiting budget is much higher than it was before Steve Spurrier arrived, but it’s still significantly lower than several other SEC programs.

Facilities to attract recruits: 3 -- While Williams-Brice Stadium has a great gameday atmosphere and there is a new indoor practice facility, there is still a great need for improvement in other areas of their football facilities.

Next-level considerations: 5 -- South Carolina has produced 22 NFL draft picks since 2010.

Other intangibles: 3 -- While Steve Spurrier dramatically improved the status of South Carolina, the Gamecocks have never won an SEC or national title, and in-state rival Clemson continues to overshadow what South Carolina has done.

Looks pretty flakey to me. Coots get a 5 for next level consideration for sending 22 to the NFL and the Tigers get a 4 after sending 29??
