You could argue several ways. 4 teams in...easier for more

teams involved. However, I could say there was more parity in the 90s-2000s than now and more teams had a shot to get in the top two. Alabama has made it pretty #### difficult for any team to win at present, and could therefore say it is more difficult now.

Then the difficulty of winning a championship is a direct function of the number of teams. So, with 128 teams, it is more difficult now.
If you are asking is it more difficult for Clemson to win...or LSU...or Boise St., or Middle Tennessee St...those are very complex questions, and they all have different answers.

All you have to ask is the following;
"How many more games does your team have to play in order to win a national championship?" In 1981 we played twelve games. Already we played the same total and have at least one more and likely two.

would stockpile talent and keep them away from other teams making it virtually impossible for anyone without unlimited resources to have a shot. With the scholarship reductions to 105 in the early 70s, down to 95 in the late 70s and down to the current 85 in the early 90s, more teams have a legitimate shot to find and develop talent and to win it than in the past.

Last year clemson would have won the national championship pre-BCS. Orange bowl matchup vs number 4 Oklahoma would have clinched it.
BCS clemson would have played Bama but without another top opponent before so fewer injuries and we all know those played a part.
This season clemson would not have a chance if we went by the BCS.
It is a difficult question because you no longer have to go undefeated but even if you do you have to win extra games. No doubt the BCS was the easiest route for traditional powers.

circumstances of that particular season. Pre-BCS it was all about whether or not you were undefeated, and which bowl your conference was aligned with, which determined your opponent. But at least several teams had a shot if #1 lost on NYD. The BCS reduced it to a one-game showdown with only 2 teams having a chance, and media bias, tradition and regional favoritism had a greater impact (see Bama/LSU rematch).
The number of games played and all that (versus 1981) seems a wash to me. Yeah, more games now, but in some years, it's just more mediocre ACC teams (BC, Syr, etc) and a second "bought home game against a patsy". People forget that the 1981 team beat 3 teams that finished ranked in the Top 11. FINISHED IN THE TOP 11... (it doesn't matter where a team is ranked in Sept or Oct). Those 3 teams were in the Top 11 at the end of the season EVEN AFTER a loss to Clemson. That's strong.
Sure, the ACC is tougher now, but that wasn't the case just a few short years ago, before Louisville joined and Clemson got good again. In 2010, Va Tech won the ACC and went to the Orange Bowl, and they were the only ACC team with less than 4 losses. They went 11-3 against a weak schedule and lost to James Madison. LOL. Quite a few years the ACC was just FSU and nobody else...

12-0 got us our title in 1981 and our orange bowl win wasn't against a top 2 ranked team. 14-0 in 2015 only got us the opportunity to play in the National Championship against the the #2 team.

Semifinal
then the big game for Natty against a team that was also able to navigate through something similar to above....instead of getting it because the bowl had a conference tie in as in the old day.

I would say now....
In 1981, Clemson won all 10 regular season games; the season ended the week before Thanksgiving. The Orange Bowl on Jan 1 was the only post-season game. The Tigers won to claim the championship with a final record of 11-0.
Regular seasons now are 12 games. Most conferences have a championship game played the first weekend in December. More than 1 loss pretty much eliminates the potential of making it to the playoffs. To win requires 2 more wins so that means 14 or 15 wins in the same season. The 3 post-season games require a lot of travel and the season is not over until Jan. 9. The more games played the greater the chance of a significant injury. Plus it is important to remember the players are in school and under the microscope from a tedious media.
Definitely harder today (my opinion).

It's fairer now. Back then it depended on how many AP Sports writers you paid off to get there.
