Doug Flutie

Dec 22, 2012, 10:48 PM

He is sooo over-rated, why is his hail mary so hyped?? I mean its not THAT rare to see a hail mary thrown for a win. He was also a QB that wore the number 22. That guy confuses me.

One of the best performances ever in the valley

By an opposing player

I can still remember where I was watching that game

Dec 22, 2012, 10:57 PM

live when it happened. I was at a friend's apartment in Clemson watching it.

When was that, like 1984? And I still remember the exact moment when it occurred? How many games can you remember watching 25+ years later?

Miami was nearly unbeatable at that time. It was seminal moment in NCAA history, man. It was THAT good.

plus, the little guy threw the ball 65 yards in the air

Dec 22, 2012, 11:11 PM

from his own 36 yard line into the endzone on the fly. Not many humans can do that after already playing 60 minutes.

He also confused the Tiger defense, a couple of times, if I remember correctly. I saw him play in DV, he was the real deal! Little guy, too.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wrong, and even the NFL figured it out... though too late.

Dec 23, 2012, 9:42 AM

I was in Boston for that game when they spelt "F-L-U-T-I-E" in continuous burn on a fireworks board at the other end of the stadium to open the second half. They then came out and he proceeded to thump our A$$ for the win. It was one of the best individual performances I've ever witnessed in person. He could have been a Tarkenton-type QB but the CFL was his only chance. 6 of the 8 years he played in the CFL he was voted MVP.

Over-rated is not a word to describe Flutie. I saw him play a couple of times in person and on TV several times. He was a great college QB and would have probably had a stellar career in the NFL if the NFL were not so reliant on physical attributes (height, strength, speed). He had heart and was a winner, something that cannot be measured.
