I haven't been to the Grand Canyon yet, so can't give any advice on that one per se.

Hualapei Indian Reservation

is super cool. They did the skywalk which is cool, but you can hike down and take a boat down the river, then you can also do a Helicopter ride around the canyon as well. Both were really cool. The Hualapei do a good job in telling their story and overall, very nice people.
Skywalk is a bit of a gimmick to get you there, but that really isn't even the coolest part of that experience.
I do suggest.

Not sure if this is advice, but here's how that works.

Fly into PHX. It will be prime tequila trunk temps, around 108 degrees. But it's a dry heat, which means literally ####### nothing. It's hot bro, hotter than a crock pot brisket on high for 16 hours.
Drive to the Grand Canyon. It's far. Real far. 4 hours, 6 hours, something like that.
Arrive at the Grand Canyon. The temperature is now 37 degrees. My lord. What a swing. Hope you've brought enough clothing.
Then you look at the Grand Canyon. Awesome stuff! For like 15 minutes. It's a huge gash in the earth.
Drive back to PHX, stop off for another site seeing thing on the way back, whatevs.
At the end of all of this, box checked....YES I'VE BEEN TO THE GRAND CANYON. Cool trip bro. Would not do it again.
Honest Abe, I'd take them to NYC instead. Will be much more memorable and more stuff to do than look at a hole in the ground.

I do not think people realize that Vegas doesnt have to be "Vegas". You can stay up in Red Rock Canyon and do some awesome hiking/mountain biking, then do Hoover ###, Grand Canyon....then if you want, drive over to LA for a couple of nights.
People get all caught up in Vegas being the strip, but there is a million other things to do.

Same story though. WOW. Enough concrete to pave a 2 lane hwy from LA to NYC. Awesome. After 15 minutes, time to move on.

Pretty much this except if you go from LV you can also see Hoover ###.
You driving through hours of nothing to get to the Grand Canyon, so make sure you have gas and be prepared to #### and crap on the side of the road.

reading.
We took a tour. Mainly because lazy. You can really map it out and drive it yourself to all the overlooks.
Definitely TRY to stay at the El Tovar Hotel INSIDE the park (need to book MONTHS in advance). Do not want to stay outside the park because that's basically the Arizona version of Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. If not El Tovar, get a place inside the park and away from the canyon. It's a short walk to the village. El Tovar was Clark Griswold's choice, so all you need to know.
Stay at least 10 feet from the elk, they can get skittish.
Don't try and pose for a cool Instagram pic, as you can fall, and write out your will, mail it off, have it notarized, and filed in the courthouse before you hit the bottom.
Mule rides are fun, but haven't done those. One thing I would have liked to have tried, but they don't allow young kids. A good 4-5 hour drive from Phoenix. About the same over to Vegas. Oh, and hop off 17 and take the scenic detour through Sedona. Town is touristy, but it's a lot better drive than the interstate. We drove through snow there in April.

Wait, you suggested staying at a hotel in the GC park and

called Sedona touristy?
Sedona, in my opinion is far less of a tourist trap than The GC. Cool to see the whole in the ground but hotels blow anywhere close.
Hiking, jeep tours, restaurants all far better in Sedona. Much more chill vibe.

Sedona (the downtown) reminded me of Gatlinburg

So did the Grand Canyon park entrance.
Inside the Grand Canyon park, it did not remind me of Gatlinburg. All are "touristy" in that tourists are there. But inside the park LOOKED less touristy. I mean you come out of the park and you have a ton of fast food places, the obligatory stuff your face pancake houses, the hotels everywhere, etc.
As for Sedona, other than the downtown area, it was pretty cool, and yes, not as "touristy". Found some pig balls and rattlesnake to eat in Sedona, so that made it totally worth it. But was not impressed with the entrance to the Grand Canyon Park, or downtown Sedona. Everywhere else in between, and in the Grand Canyon Park, was pretty cool. Only touristy because tourists were walking around. But missing were the gawdy places that try to extract their dollars.

Flagstaff and the San Francisco Peaks that will add something beyond the typical tourist trip to the GC
I enjoyed Walnut Canyon & Sunset Crater Volcano too
(we went for a week a while back and stayed in Flagstaff and drove up to GC a couple of days then diid other stuff the rest of the time)
Check on everything to see what's open before you go. last I looked the Havasupai village was closed to outsiders to keep the 'Rona out.

This reminds me of an essay I read in college.
Apr 1, 2021, 10:22 AM
|
|
"The Loss of the Creature" is an exploration of the way the more or less objective reality of the individual is obscured in and ultimately lost to systems of education and classification. Percy begins by discussing the Grand Canyon — he says that, whereas García López de Cárdenas, who discovered the canyon, was amazed and awed by it, the modern-day sightseer can see it only through the lens of "the symbolic complex which has already been formed in the sightseer's mind". Because of this, the sightseer does not appreciate the Grand Canyon on its own merits; he appreciates it based on how well or poorly it conforms to his preexisting image of the Grand Canyon, formed by the mythology surrounding it. What is more, instead of approaching the site directly, he approaches it by taking photographs, which, Percy says, is not approaching it at all. By these two processes—judging the site on postcards and taking his own pictures of it instead of confronting it himself — the tourist subjugates the present to the past and to the future, respectively.

in my mind that's the best view you could ever possibly have. So I've never had the urge to drive to there and "tour" it.
It is awe-inspiring, just so massive and weird compared to where we live.

My wife and I did the mule ride around the south rim. It was great ... not heart-pounding, but just enough to be different from the hum-drum. Going to the Phantom Ranch in the canyon needed to be booked 12-18 months in advance. I expected the group to be led by a crusty, old, 50-something ranch hand, but instead, we had a 30-something, gorgeous female ranch hand named Stacey. Great time!
