This year or in general?

This year, likely not. Since it looks like most teams will play less than 25 games or fewer.

However, in previous years it was a quasi rule. But that started breaking down in the late 2000s, early 2010 when they started focusing on bumping more midmajors into the tourney. After that, 20 wins was for "name programs only" others needed 22-24 wins.

Best case example was in 2014. A 20-12 (10-8) Clemson team that was bumped to the NIT while a 21-13 (9-9) NC State got the dance invite. Not only did Clemson actually have a better regular season record, but we beat NC State by 18 a few weeks prior. Both teams were eliminated by Duke in the ACC Tourney, BUT NC State lost by 18 while Duke escaped by 1 via free throws because of one of the most questionable calls in ACC tourney history where by even european soccer would have noted the flop. I won't discount NC State's win over Cuse that year but the NCAA committee reach past a better team to grab NC State at the sake of Clemson.

or worse... they accepted a 19-12 Nebraska and several other 20-12 B12/B10

In the last NCAA Tournament to actually happen (2019), there were four teams selected for at-large births who did not have 20 wins (Baylor, Florida, Oklahoma and Ohio State). This year, you may very well have teams with 15 or 16 wins who get in. So in either case, 20 wins is no longer a standard...though I'd say it's certainly a measuring point, under normal scenarios that say you're more than likely either in or, at the least, on the bubble.

I think it takes 6 wins if you're at a school starting with "The."

IF we get to play the rest....we'll have 23 total games....

before the ACC tournament.
16 might be the magic number for this team for total wins.
