Do we really play akron and the citadel in the same season?

Jan 20, 2020, 7:57 AM

Thats terrible scheduling.... oh lord. And both within the first 3 games?????? Is that true? Awful. We can do better.

Re: Do we really play akron and the citadel in the same season?

Jan 20, 2020, 7:59 AM

Does it really make a difference whether we do or don't?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, i think it does.

Jan 20, 2020, 10:33 AM

I would like to see us build up our schedule so that we might lose one game in a season and STILL be in the CFP. Better non-conference scheduling seems to best way to do that.

If you are happy winning the ACC keep it like it is.

If you want to consistently win Nattys - strengthen the schedule.

Re: Yes, i think it does.

Jan 20, 2020, 10:58 AM

I was thinking the ACC will be improving some. Also, we do play ND. I think we will go again this next season. It would be nice to be a touch more battle tested though.

The ACC & SCAR are the problem, not Akron & Citadel

Jan 20, 2020, 11:18 AM

If we didn’t play SCAR every year, we could add a power 5 team that raised our sos.

Heck, even playing teams like TAMU hasn’t helped recently.

And the ACC is just what it is right now. Great programs have been brought in and they have proceeded to dry up.

It’s not a simple problem. But it’s what we have.

You coots can't be complaining about Clemson scheduling

Jan 20, 2020, 7:59 AM

The citadel. Need I remind you the last time you two played?

Citadel will probably be military appreciation weekend in November.

I would guess the Citadel game will be the military appreciation game late in the year. Schedule announced Wednesday on P & D show.

It's the same scheduling formula we've been using for like

Jan 20, 2020, 8:04 AM

15 years now. 1 in-state FCS, 1 G5, SC, and one big P5. It just so happens that Akron is a really, really bad G5 right now, but these schedules are done so far out it's nearly impossible to know which G5 programs are going to be good.

The bad schedule is next year or whenever we play Wyoming. That one is a joke.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It's the same scheduling formula we've been using for like

Jan 20, 2020, 10:03 AM

How is Wyoming a joke compared to our usual G5? Seems to me that is a somewhat better - or at least more intriguing -- opponent than the regular Troy, Charlotte, poop.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's not Wyoming, it's the fact that we played Wyoming

Jan 20, 2020, 3:31 PM

in place of our usual big OOC game against Notre Dame, Auburn, A&M, Georgia, etc. If the ACC and SC are both bad that year we could have no decent game on the entire schedule.

Wyoming beat Ga. State in the Arizona Bowl

Jan 20, 2020, 10:37 AM [ in reply to It's the same scheduling formula we've been using for like ]

Finished 8-5 this year with a young squad. There freshman QB, Levi Williams 6’5” - 210, got some quality playing time in the Bowl game...2 passing TD’s and one by run.
He’ll be experienced & seasoned by the time we play them.
We could’ve done worse.

Re: Wyoming beat Ga. State in the Arizona Bowl

Jan 20, 2020, 11:12 AM

I don’t think the criticism is of Wyoming. Agreed, they are a pretty good G5 team that knocked off Missouri this past season. But the other 3 OOC games are SC State, UConn, @SouthCarolina.

Having to play South Carolina to finish the season is one game that really hurts our SOS!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You c0c# lovers scheduled Akron a year ago...

Jan 20, 2020, 8:12 AM

instead of rescheduling the game with Marshall. Not only was it a sad, pathetic, weak and desperate attempt to become bowl eligible, you were afraid to play Marshall because it would have been a likely loss for you.

Surely you remember the Akron game. Not only was it the game where the University reported attendance in the 50,000 range when only about 5,500 uof6c fans actually showed-up, it was the game right before your humiliating 30 - 0 loss to UVa in the Belk Bowl.

How'd that all work-out for you?

Re: Do we really play akron and the citadel in the same season?

Jan 20, 2020, 8:51 AM

I respectfully disagree. I think it is brilliant scheduling. Here's why:

1. (Secondary reason) Getting into the playoffs has two rules - Win 'em all and you're in. Lose one and you need some help. Clemson is in a position where finishing 12-1, winning the conference championship and losing to a "quality out of conference opponent" doesn't guarantee a spot in the playoffs. So, no need to take the chance.

2. (Primary reason) Money. The profit from those two games will pay for the total cost of every non-revenue sport at the university. I think that before each game there should be an on-field celebration. One game should have half the teams - players, coaches, trainers, support staff - on the field. The PA announcer should call out the sports by name and say, "We thank all of you fans here today. Your attendance has made it possible for all of the student-athletes to attend this great university and participate in their sport. Without your attendance, this would not be possible."

Basketball coaches usually refer to is as "buying two wins." I think it makes great sense for a football team to do the same thing.

Wouldn't # 2 be true if we played a higher quality team too***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wouldn't # 2 be true if we played a higher quality team too***

Jan 20, 2020, 3:21 PM

probably not.

1. If you play a "higher ranked team" you might have to play them home-and-home. That would only give you the equivbalent of 1/2 a home game in terms of revenue.

2. If you finde a higher ranked team that is willing to come to Clemson for a one year contract, you would probably have to pay them a lot more money. (Numbers for discussion only) Team A may come for $500K. A higher ranked team B might require $1M. That extra 500k goes a long way in funding those non-revenue sports.

Jan 20, 2020, 9:08 AM

for SCar to have a 5-6 record (at best!) coming into Death Valley on Nov 28th. Means they need a win to be bowl eligible- and they aren’t going to get it! So sweet!

The downside is SCar uses this for negative recruiting. “Go to Clemson and you’ll miss Christmas. Come play for the Gamecocks and you’ll be guaranteed to be home every Christmas.”

Pull up the schedule for OSU, OU, LSU, Bama, UF, UGA or Auburn and then tell me about the OOC game that ANY of them scheduled that is tougher than ND at ND. Hint - you won’t find a single one.

What you will find is a parade of nobodies and it’s nobodies played AT HOME. What you will also find is most of those teams play 8 home games, half of them being complete nobodies. The other half are conference cellar dwellers. They’ll play 1 or 2 real games a year and they’ll beat their chest about their brutal conference schedule. It’s an absurd lie.....and most people believe it.

Re: Do we really play akron and the citadel in the same season?

If I'm seeing this correctly, we will have 2 conference games to start the year, right?? Akron is weekend #3 of season so and all other OoC games are in Nov. So we will have 2 ACC games- Sept 5 and Sept 12.
