...Dale Hatcher stands alone as best of the kickers who only punted. Nobody else comes close.
If you talk about the combination kicker/punters, then of course Chris Gardocki was best and then there was Nelson Welch who was second. I thought Bradley Pinion was probably third as a combination guy and was probably in the top 5 as a pure punter.
After Hatcher, Gardocki, Welch and Pinion, things sort of level out IMHO.
We've had a number of good to very good punters, but very few great ones.
If you're a real old timer, you'll recall a guy from the erly 1960s named Eddie Werntz who was a real artist as a punter with good distance and hang time, and a special ability to execute the "coffin corner" punt.

First time posting here ! I played against Hatcher in high school. He hit the ambulance parked outside of our fence behind our end zone ,twice .Our head coach suggested we rush him and try to block his punts. Needless to say we had no volunteers !! He's #1 in my opinion .

Hatcher was the second best punter on his Cheraw High School team. (David ?) Newsome was No 1 and punted for Wake Forest and then in the pros. No 2 wasn't bad either!

Hatcher then Sims then Gardocki. No other punters are close to these.
Edit- Add Bradley Pinion to that list, and Banks McFadden. McFadden still holds some punting records, including most punts over 50 yds in a game (6) and in a season (22 in 1939 on 65 punts).

Someone had Nelson Welsh listed----I do not think he punted, just PK. Banks punted years ago and was good. Charlie Waters punted also. But you have the best ones listed. Speirs was steady.

Obviously no one has heard of Eddie Werntz. Check the records. Eddie punted for us in the early 60s. The first year he punted he was 2nd in the ACC and the next year he finished 1st and 8th in the nation. He was the punter the first game the Clucks played at Clemson. Had a 44 yard average and placed 3 kicks out inside the 10 yard line. We won that game 12 to 2. Coach Howard found him on campus after another players' father told him about Eddie. Eddie according to sources was a good running back in high school also. He told Coach Howard he only wanted to be a punter. Coach Howard told him since you only want to be half of a football player I'm only going to give you half of a scholarship.
