Dabo said our new kicker had signed with the soccer team,

but if he plays football, I thought there was an NCAA (bad) rule that says he has to be counted as a football scholarship. Someone who actually knows, please explain.

It's in the section describing him but yes he counts as a football scholarship.

If he already signed with our soccer team and then decided to try kicking for the football team also, then he will be added to the list of football scholarship players and removed from the soccer list.

This is cited on the TNet page detailing each of today's commit. If you trust DHood, then it is correct

Maybe he doesn’t count against the Football scholarships until he actually starts playing.
If so, that would be an extra spot.

That is a long time rule that the NCAA has screwed up now for a long time. If a player plays another sport, and they want to play FB, they have to count against the 85 scholarship rule in place for FB. Screwed up yes, but why, I don't think there is a logical answer, or none that I know about....

It’s because schools like Alabama used to have their players “play” baseball or other sports so that they could have extra scholarships. Trust me this rule is way better than the alternative.

Because then you can put guys on track scholarships

and such and end up with 90+ scholarship football players instead of 85.

It all depends on his primary sport. If he plays soccer then during soccer season he has to be primarily soccer and when the schedules conflict it’s his primary sport that wins.

If he wins a kicking job. It's great use of a scholarship. If his skills don't translate to football. He can stick to soccer and come off the football 85.

Have we had a player play both sports before? I'm wondering how that would work with the schedules since the two sports are both played in the fall. I realize that a kicker probably doesn't need the same sort of practice time as a lot of positions, but I'm wondering how it would be handled with games on the same day, or at least close enough to impact travel?
