Have any of you gone so far as to insulate a metal building?

Aug 14, 2020, 9:52 AM

My 20'x25' building just gets too hot for too much of the year. It has hampered my budding woodworking. I figure there must be some way to insulate the place Then put something like this in it. All the videos I watched on YouTube had lots of conflict in the comments.

aero: "please elaborate"

Do you ####### know what elaborate means?

Aug 14, 2020, 11:15 AM

I didn't ask what the #### he was talking about, I asked for further details about why this is better.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

aero just elaborated what he meant by 'elaborate'

Insulation just slows the rate of heat entering the room...

Aug 14, 2020, 1:45 PM [ in reply to Please elaborate.*** ]

If you want to 'feel' more comfortable, get a Bigass Fan, or any HVLS fan. It will induce a draft across your skin, therefore feeling much cooler.

Big ### fans are the starter of all this.

There are many knock offs that are cheaper. Just look for an HVLS fan for your shop size.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yo, OP, put mirrors on the roof

Aug 14, 2020, 10:46 AM

yore whalecum

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That would cause some issues.

Aug 14, 2020, 10:53 AM

I wouldn't mind solar panels up there, but I don't want to pay for those and am not sure it could even support them.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have you considered tossing some pallets in the wood chipper

Aug 14, 2020, 10:47 AM

then pasting the sawdust under the pallet plywood walls?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, this sounds insane.***

I have seen a couple with some kind of sprayed-on insulation

Aug 14, 2020, 10:58 AM

one was cool and comfortable with a window AC. I really don't know any details, but it seems like it might be relatively inexpensive.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i wouldnt spray a metal building like that

Aug 14, 2020, 11:34 AM

prob too much movement
how's it framed aerozeptallica?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Metal studs/ rafters every 5 feet.***

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

hmmm...tricky

Aug 14, 2020, 11:45 AM

yeah, def don't spray.

you could fit some rigid insulation in there, but you'll have a lot of probably unusable (well, less usable, anyway) waste due to that span...4x8 boards cut down to 4x5-ish

i think a faced batt insulation would be more trouble than it's worth, trying to get that to stay in place

roof mounted exhaust fan(s) could be the deal, doe

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One of the videos I watched had the guy

Aug 14, 2020, 11:50 AM

using some spray glue to keep the batts. However they didn't use any sort of vapor barrier then showed how stubborn they are when people told them it is going to mold in no time.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

u could do the same w/ the rigid insulation

Aug 14, 2020, 11:54 AM

and it's closed cell polystyrene so it shouldn't support mold growth....wouldn't worry so much about a vapor barrier in this case

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

BUT, at the same time...unless you've got HVAC in there

Aug 14, 2020, 11:55 AM

what are you really insulating?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Heat radiating from the roof.

Aug 14, 2020, 12:07 PM

I'd put solid styrofoam/rigid panels on the ceiling/roof, and get some fans.

Nahghana be cheap though.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Build a new, larger building around it.

Aug 14, 2020, 11:02 AM

Fill the space between buildings with copper tubing. Like jam it through. Pump cold water through that tubing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You have to have openings to allow air flow.

Aug 14, 2020, 11:18 AM

You have to have openings to allow air to move. Try one on each side of the building. For example, if your building has four walls, you should have four openings - one on each wall. Don't count the ceiling though.

I've got the rolling door, a side door, then two windows.

Aug 14, 2020, 11:23 AM

Maybe that's the ticket.

PS. I usually have the regular door and rolling door

Aug 14, 2020, 11:24 AM [ in reply to You have to have openings to allow air flow. ]

and regular door open.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Put a box fan in the door facing out

Aug 14, 2020, 1:20 PM

and open the doors and windows so it pulls air through the building.

Either build a new one under ground, or mound up dirt over the current one. I don't care. Either one should work great!

Re: Have any of you gone so far as to insulate a metal building?

How much sunlight does the building get? In the south during summer, you're going to run the risk of insulation hurting as much as it helps. It looks like you've got some openings in the building, so I agree that fans/air circulation are the way to go.

I'd also suggest some sort of vent in the roof to allow hot air to escape. That would still be cheaper than insulation.

Depending on your yard situation, trees or some other sort of shade on the southern and western sides of the building could be a big help.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It pretty well bakes all day.

Aug 14, 2020, 11:44 AM

Only in the worst of winter does it really get cold in there. I figured the AC portion would help with any heat that got trapped.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It pretty well bakes all day.

Aug 14, 2020, 11:59 AM

Are you saying you have AC in the shed? If you do, insulation should help the AC do its job. If not, I think shade and airflow are better options.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am saying some sort of AC unit is part of the plan.

Aug 14, 2020, 12:11 PM

Maybe window unit, but more likely one of those portable ones.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

6" w/ white vinyl face.

Aug 14, 2020, 12:27 PM

I've only done that on large buildings. If the roof ever leaks shoot the vinyl face with a BB gun to let the water out and it cures the sag.

Re: Have any of you gone so far as to insulate a metal building?

Aug 14, 2020, 3:37 PM

If the sun is hitting the roof directly, no amount of insulation is going to help.

If the roof is also metal, they make a really expensive surface paint which is supposed to block most of the heat penetration.

One brand is Sunshield and it's $55 a gallon or so.

Coverage is 100 sq ft/gal.
