Any chance that he will redshirt next year if Huegel is back healthy or does he need the experience?

He will kick off regardless of Huegel. Gentleman has a canon like we’ve not seen since Donald and Obed.

Why did we let foreigners like them play football at the expense of native SC players like Jake Bentley who have to go elsewhere?
Its worse then letting Yankees like Christian Wilkins take the place of the Syvelle Newtons of the world.

I went out to the practice fields...

to watch a buddy from high school participate in walk-on try-outs as a kicker.
There were several other kickers there and most of them we hitting 35 and 40 yarders pretty consistently.
The rest of the team started making their way out to the practice fields from Jervey and, of course, Iggy, was among them. He was barefooted, carrying his helmet in his hand, and had his shoes tied together and thrown over his shoulder.
He stopped to watch the wouldbe walk-on kickers for a few minutes. Then, he walks to mid field, sets a ball on a tee with a holder, and without stretching or warming-up, kicks a 60 yard field goal barefooted that would have easily been good from another ten yards out.
Most of those wouldbe walk-on kickers looking-on in stunned amazement, shook their heads as if to say "why bother", and walked away.

and Obed Ariri (while kicking from the 40 yard line) did not kick single touchback.
Seemed odd to me when I recall some of his really long FGs. Surely he had the leg strength.
I guess we could say that it was a coaches strategy to kick it short? I dunno.
Back then the ball only came out to the 20 yard line on a touchback, so the odds of stopping the other team inside the 20 seemed not to be worth the risk of a long run back.
Anyway ... like I say ... strange.

Don't remember, but seems like at least two.
And the point is ... it only takes one big breakdown of special teams to lose a game and offset all the times you stopped their returns inside the 20.
IMHO, "The Touchback" is one of the most potent defensive plays in football.

Huegel seems to be very consistent on the field goals up to 42-43 yards. His kickoffs sometimes make the end zone. If Potter can boom it consistently and accurately, he will get his chances.

I could envision a situation where Huegel is the starting kicker but Potter comes in if it is over 42 yards and handles kickoffs. You get the best of both worlds. Consistency of Huegel under 40 yards and a kid with a leg for longer attempts and kickoffs.

I believe we won 7-3 that season thanks to Obed making a solo tackle.

I remember that tackle. Not text book form, but he got him on the ground.

As a witness of watching Potter for the past 2-3 years, I do not see Potter taking a redshirt. Dude is a monster. He will kickoff, and may be the longer FG guy (45+). But not a bad situation to have two great legs to rely on once again.

I seem to recall we had a "two kicker" situation several years ago, one for the short FGs and one for the long FGs. Anyone remember?
