Duane does play lead on the original "Layla", but Eric could do it then and has since played that part often in concert. The problem was not playing the riff, it was Eric's singing while playing the riff. Eric never sang with the Yardbirds, Keith Relf did. With Cream Jack Bruce sang lead on most of their songs and with Blind Faith it was Stevie Winwood. Eric had never learned how to hold a long note like the main chorus on "Layla" while playing a completely different complicated riff on the guitar. It took him a lot of practice to learn, so he turned to another great guitarist, Duane Allman to help him out.PS I learned this from Duane while moving his equipment, a great guy as well as a great guitarist. And Clapton later told the same story in a "Rolling Stone" interview.
