Former Clemson signee commits to another ACC school

Former 2021 Clemson signee and Heritage (NC) guard Lucas Taylor announced a commitment to Wake Forest over the weekend. Taylor was released from his letter of intent to the Tigers upon his request a couple of weeks ago. He is a third commitment for the Deamon Deacons' 2021 class. Clemson has two inc Read Update »

Because Clemson basketball is irrelevant. Only people outside of the program seems to be willing to admit it. Change is needed. It is not a coincidence that these coaches and players are bailing. I for one, as a life long Clemson fan have written this basketball program off as long as Brownell is here.

The Wake Forest program is in more turmoil than Clemson's basketball program. They have at least 8 players declare for the transfer list and they haven't had a winning season in at least four years. Get behind BB and the Clemson players and support them with positive comments so other recruits will want to come to our school and play basketball. Go Tigers!

We should be able to recruit with Gonzaga and Baylor, they are in bigger cities but not major metro areas. We gotta find the right coach, or we have to continue to support Brad. Just firing a coach may make things worse. He has had the time, but when you look at some of the elite programs, they are not so elite every year. Particularly this year.
We would all like a run to the Final 4 sometime while we are still alive!

And he didn't need to be "closer to home" when he committed ? Maybe too much uncertainty in program.

FYI... he’s from the town of Wake Forest. Not particularly close

to Winston-Salem.

He’s from the Raleigh area. Many choices closer to home than WFU.

Not buying the “needs to be close to home” excuse.

But if it’s so important to be close,

there are many good places he could have gone that are much closer than that.

So...did he only need to be kinda close...but not too close? Interesting.

He needed to be closer to home - THAT’S CORRECT!

Apr 5, 2021, 2:35 PM [ in reply to He needed to be closer to home. ]

Yes - I have a connection that knows their family well from AAU circles. Yes, he needed / wanted to be closer to Raleigh so his parents could see more of his games. 2 hrs is much closer than 4.5 hrs.

Sorry we lost him and he didn’t decide this up front, but wish him well and glad he stayed in the ACC!

It's sad to see people who claim to be Clemson basketball fans being so critical.

Why is the default assumption that our program stinks and our coaches are awful, rather than the reason being something that had nothing to do with Clemson?

Our fans really are turds.

So it's not okay for our fans to say bad things about the coach, but it's okay for you to call Clemson fans turds and Skalski a d-bag. You lose credibility with your snarky criticisms, when you do the very thing you complain about. Do as you say, not as you do.

Literally every college team loses players to the transfer portal and unfortunately it will happen more probably. Also Kids in every sport are treating commitments and letters of intent like it's a commitment for a prom date. And assistant coaches are always looking to move up or to a place they think helps them move up. We aren't different.

Why would I want to compete at Clemson if the fans are turds? Not a strong (nor smart) selling point. How about Clemson fans actually care about their Bball program?

Re: TNET: Former Clemson signee commits to another ACC school

Apr 5, 2021, 11:26 AM

One of the primary keys to success of any athletic program is stability.

That has been a huge factor for our football program given that Alabama and Ohio State have more talent. But our stability, which is considered unusual at this level of success, Has been highly underrated.

Clemson basketball, however, could be seen as a poster child for instability!

Instability has been the defining feature of our basketball program the last five years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What makes our program so unstable?

Apr 5, 2021, 3:38 PM

Are you referring to the coaching staff or the roster?

If you are referring to the coaching staff, our head coach has been here 11 years. Coach Bender has been with Brad since he came to Clemson, with a two year break to coach at College of Charleston from 2014-2016. Coach Simmons was hired here as an assistant in 2018 after being a head coach for 16 years, and just left to take a head coaching job elsewhere. Coach Reynolds Dean was hired here in 2017. Matt Bucklin was hired in 2018 as Director of Operations.

We just lost Coach Goins, who had been here a few years. He received a promotion and a raise and was also able to be closer to his father-in-law who is in poor health.

We have lost several good assistant coaches over the years who accepted head coaching positions. That's a good thing, and speaks highly of Brownell and our program.

The staff turnover we have had is not excessive by any means. Look at other programs and you'll see that this is true.

You mentioned the uncommon stability with our football program, so I will let you in on a secret. Do you know the main reason we have such good coaching longevity within the football program? Because we pay them really well. When your two coordinators make more money than they would as a head coach at many other division I programs, you're naturally going to see coaches stay unless it's a head coaching position they can't refuse. And you certainly aren't going to see them take an assistant coach position at another school, since they are already the highest paid assistant coaching staff in college football.

Plus, college basketball has a lot more teams at the division I level. There are many more coaching spots available for a coach to take, either as a head coach or as an assistant. If Clemson wants to hire and retain the best basketball coaches, then we need to up our budget considerably.

If you're referring to stability in terms of roster, the ability of college basketball players to transfer so easily has created all sorts of problems. Over the past few years, we have lost fewer players than average to transfer. It might seem like a lot if you're primarily a Clemson football fan, but in terms of basketball we don't lose a lot of players.

I will be curious to see how college football changes now that transferring is becoming easier. That, plus the fact that Clemson recruits such elite players who all want to play, and I predict we will see more Clemson players transferring in the hope of getting more playing time/stardom.

Wake Forest has been the most unstable program in the ACC

Apr 6, 2021, 9:44 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Former Clemson signee commits to another ACC school ]

... since Skip Prosser.

Closer to home, I can buy ... more stability? Forget it!

And on top of that, Clemson has kinda owned Wake recently.

I would imagine he probably is seeking a staff that has the ability to develop any sort of offensive gameplan and maybe in their 2 year career at Clemson make them better than they were before they arrived.
