Kent State Has Lead at Midpoint of Clemson Invitational

Sunset, SC—Kent State has a four-shot lead over Maryland and a five-shot lead over host Clemson at the midpoint of the fifth Clemson Invitational women’s golf tournament. The 18-teams in the field played 27 holes on Friday, as inclement weather is expected over the weekend. The teams are expected to play a full 54-hole event by the end of play on Sunday.

Kent State shot an opening round 284, four-under-par on the par 72 course that is 6,471 yards in length. They are at even par through nine holes in the second round. Caley McGinty shot an opening round six-under-par 66 to lead the way. She had a chance to tie the tournament record for on round, but made a bogey on her last hole. Still, McGinty has a three shot lead after 27 holes with a six-under-par score. Chloe Salort stands at one-under-par after 27 holes to give McGinty support.
Maryland stands at even par through 27 holes. The Terps shot one under par 287 in the first round and stand at one over par for the first nine of the second round. Maryland has been led by Virunpat Olankitkunchai, the 20th ranked player in the nation, who stands at two under par through 27 holes. She had a 71 in the opening round.
Clemson has been led by Savannah Grewal through the first round and a half. She had an opening round 72, but is three-under par, best in the field of 93 golfers, through the first nine holes of the second round. She is in second place all by herself at three-under. The sophomore is second on the team in stroke average entering this tournament with a 74.42 figure.
Annabelle Pancake is also in the top 10 after 27 holes. The freshman who tied the Clemson record with a 65 in her final round at the Clover Cup two weeks ago, had an even par 72 in the first round and stands at even par so far in the second. She has scored seven birdies so far, best on the Clemson team and tied for third in the tournament.
Ivy Sheperd, ranked 39th in the nation by Golfstat, had a 73 in the first round and stands one over par through nine holes of the second round. The junior is in 18th place in the individual race.
Alexandra Swayne shot a 75 in the opening round and is one over so far in the second round and stands in 33rd place. Clemson’s second best golfer in the second round has been Callista Rice. She had a 78 in the first round, but is one-under-par so far in the second round.
Clemson has three players participating as individuals. Gabriella Tomanka, a freshman playing in her first tournament, shot a 76 in the opening round, but is one under par in the second and stands in 25th place. Gracyn Burgess and Lindsay May are both eight-over-par through 27 holes, and stand in a tie for 61st place.
