With the number of scholarships increasing

will Dabo be force to use the transfer portal next year. It would seem that the number of HS recruits is going to stay fairly constant. They along with seasoned players are chasing the money making it harder for Clemson to attract some of the top athletes they go after. So with an increase of 20 scholarships times the number of D1 programs I see there being a greater divide between the haves and have nots. I feel recruiting quality players will only become more challenging.

I am an advocate of Dabo's stance and feel we need to dip into the portal from time to time to fill a need. Keep in mind the he won't take just any player. They have to fit his mold. I think the bigger problem is his stance on NIL as losing a high quality player out of HS could make a tremendous impact to the teams future. Thoughts?

In the 60s when there were unlimited scholarships Bear Bryant's philosophy was he signed players he knew wouldn't play a down for him, but they wouldn't ever beat him while playing for someone else. I don't think that will work today as guys buried on the depth chart will use the portal and be gone. I'm not sure what increasing the scholarship limit will do positively other than giving some guys that would be walk-ons a scholarship. A very few will get real playing time.

It will give you more scholarships for specialist like kickers and long snappers.

It's going to be very interesting to see the impact of the increased scholarships.

I could be WAY wrong, but I don't think you're going to see schools suddenly signing 20 more 5-stars overnight. Only so many players are willing to go and sit at a school and not play immediately. And there's only so many spots on the field at one time. Georgia can't just sign 15 offensive linemen every class for example, and Ohio State isn't going to sign three 5-star QBs every class. Every school wants to stockpile 5-star talent, but 5-star talent doesn't want to be stockpiled (unless they're seeing the field early and often.)

There will be a few more high level transfers and recruits added to classes, sure, but I think where we really see a change is we will probably see elite schools taking more fliers on lower ranked guys with elite traits or measurables. The track guy who hasn't played much football but runs a sub-10.00 100m dash... the 6'7" 450 lb lineman who needs to completely reshape his body but could be a great player after 3 years in a college strength and conditioning program... guys who only have offers from FCS schools and service academies but have a certain "something"... those are the guys who probably occupy those 20 additional scholarship spots, along with your specialists and some walk-on level guys.

It will be incredibly interesting to see how tweener FCS/G5 guys handle it. The players who are good enough to go and start for 3 years at Furman or UNC Charlotte--do they go to that school and play right away or go sign as the 99th scholarship player at Georgia and sit for 3 years hoping to then start as a RS Jr/Sr? It might make the transfer portal even more wild and crazy where Dabo might not even have a choice but to embrace it just to fill out a roster.

The problem with trying to cherry pick the portal

...is that Dabo has a well deserved reputation for not liking the portal. In the athletes' minds, that translates to "died t like portal players".

That's a big factor on why we were 0 for 3 on trying to get O Line transfers this off season.

level will be sitting on the bench getting frustrated at lack of playing time, and thus more entering the portal to not be picked up by anyone else. Why they raised football scholly is beyond me.
