Or will they ultimately split up at some point down the road?

Do you deny that Dims keep piling on regulations endlessly on everything?
I'll wait.

The money that fox (1 billion a year) and ESPN, close to the same number, means they will absolutely last. No questions asked. Its probably true that you get in one or you can't keep up financially.

Why would they split up unless forced?

Nope. If we have two super mega conferences, it will be temporary, we will end up with a single nationwide league with 50 or 60 teams, four conferences, two divisions in each conference.
NFL model.

Sort of like going back to the old Southern Conference everyone was in before the SEC broke away.

Nope. Only a matter of time before some other arrangement comes along that is more desirable. History has already proven this. So we go where we need to for the next however many years before something else looks more attractive

What I've been saying for a while is that if we go to 2 or 4 conferences, they will split into divisions, so we'll essentially be the same, just some teams in different conferences.

Who knows. Money drives everything. I think it's possible that public interest wanes if half of D1 teams are left behind. I can see a possibility that smaller, regional conferences make a come back 25 years down the road.

Yep. I lot of money is needed to finance these superconferences, and there's no way a significant portion of viewership would be turned off by being excluded.
