There will be conference championships. TV contracts with conferences, require it. Too much money to give up in an era when everyone is looking to raise more money. Down the road, conf championships may be part of the CFP. But not under the structure of FBS is now. There will be conference consolidation and alignment. Probably the top 64 teams will create a division for the big boys.

Expanding to 16 CFP teams, with an 8-game opening round instead of the 4-game opening round under the current format, would financially cover the loss of CCG's. Only one has ever really amounted to much consistently over the years and that's the SEC. The others are very much hit and miss depending on who is playing. There are enough tie-breaker scenarios to name a regular season champ / conference AQ.
Set the first week of playoffs for the 2nd weekend in December, a Thursday, Friday & Saturday lineup at home stadiums. The 8 losers here could all earn bowl spots for late December / early January. Simply plug them into the 8 holes remaining from the original scheduling. For the others just stick with the current format in place.

Why would you not have a conference championship as long as you have a conference?
That may happen in this crazy mixed up world we live in but it would be a mistake! An egregious error! Total stupidity!

In some cases, teams can be penalized if they play the conference championship

Teams, such as SMU, are almost guaranteed a CFP spot as they sit right now. why shouldn’t they just opt-out (or decline) to play the championship , where should they lose, they are likely out of the CFP

It is a crazy mixed up dumb world when players can just opt out! A team opting out of a game should automatically cause them to forfiet all games for that season and the next! If a player opts out of a game they should not be allowed to play the next year! at any school! This is crazy! stop the madness!

It will depend on what happens this year with the championships. Take uga for example. Right now they have a home game playoffs. Sure, they could win and get the auto bye. But if they lose, it could drop them to 12th.

Same for SMU, first round bye is extremely important as have to win one less game and also not suffer injuries from first round game.
