"You will not be eligible for any of our TV games or Playoff considerations if you are not in a conference. Go take your NBC money and compete with whoever you can find to make a schedule."
Of course their arrogant arses would probably sue everyone for discrimination.

The playoff selection committee prioritizes conference champions when weighing
potential contenders. That's not to say they NEED to join a conference but rather
all things being equal the nod will undoubtedly go to a conference champion. Notre Dame
could still make a run but they would almost certainly have to run the table

For the past 20 years or so, ND has been about a "6 or 7 rated kinda girl", but the media hype has been like Glamour Shots and made them out to be a 9 or 10. The elitist & elevated perception has carried them to a position where there have been too many exceptions or clauses to make sure they are a part of the Championship conversations. Putting them in a conference would ensure that they are actually earning their spot as a true contender.

ND has made the playoffs several times despite not being a conference Champion so why would they suddenly now think it was a necessity?

At some point, the Super Conferences with 20+ teams will have more conference games and ND will be squeezed out and lucky to play more than 4 or 5 quality games per year. Playing ND will not fit in the Super Conference Out-of-Confernce schedules. That won't qualify ND for the CFP. ND can stick to their guns and shrivel up or come along for the ride. They will be insignificant in 10 - 15 years staying independent. You know, kind of like if the ACC sits on their hands and does nothing.
