Here are the top 10 funded programs since 2005:

1. Oregon ($969M)
2. Texas A&M ($849M)
3. Texas ($766M)
4. Florida ($763M)
5. Georgia ($716M)
6. Oklahoma St ($670M)
7. LSU ($618M)
8. Oklahoma ($597M)
9. Auburn ($580M)
10. FSU ($540M)

I see 3 “elite” teams on there.

Interesting. Who are your elite teams?

Quite a few good teams listed there. Just curious.

USMC 1980-83
-Camp Lejeune
-Beirut, Lebanon
SC National Guard 1983-2018

Oregon, Texas, UGA. Those are the only *elite* teams on there.

Clemson has been better than the rest, and had more recent hardware than Texas and Oregon.

If you are c/p from somewhere it is decent to list your source. Final four are all top spenders so your premise is flawed. Safe to say money won’t buy a championship but a lack of it guarantees you won’t be in the mix

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How many of those top 10 teams were *in the mix*?

The premise is not the least bit flawed. That is, money doesn’t necessarily equate to being elite. Very little correlation actually.

It seems to be the media that thinks that!

None of that money could be spent directly on players until the last few years and that is/will have impact.

With NIL and portal in play, Alabama, Georgia and Michigan have won the last 4 NCs and I think OSU/TX will be the 5th. All are raising significant $ to bring in talent. This looks like the common denominator of future National Champions.

Again here are the top 10 funded programs since 2005

2. Texas A&M ($849M)
3. Texas ($766M)
4. Florida ($763M)

8. Oklahoma ($597M)
9. Auburn ($580M)

I think Georgia and Texas have been elite, and I did mention them. They’re 2 of the 3. I also think Alabama has been elite, but they aren’t top 10 in funds. Neither is Ohio State.

3 of 10 are elite. Obviously there’s a very small correlation between the top 10 funded teams and current elite status. Elite may be somewhat subjective, but who do you see other than the obvious 3?

It’s cool to speculate about what you feel may happen with the other teams on the list, but until the top 3 change its just speculation. And what is your common denominator again?

2 things, first, all 5 teams I mentioned are in the Top 15 of spending. Second, those numbers you quoted only go through 2022 and do not include the majority of the money raised for NIL/Portal since it came into existence. NIL began in July ‘21 and by the time it was implemented, it did not begin impacting rosters until the 2022 season.

I think if we had the data on spending when NIL came on, we would see the elite teams in spending are the ones grabbing the top talent and are doing well in the playoffs, and I expect that trend to continue.

Ok so again who are your elite teams outside of the 3?***

Because college sports is about getting the top talent. 2005 is not relevant to the Wild West rules now in place. Teams are currently free to buy talent in a bidders war. Unchanged this will lead to teams with more money being the elite.

I see a lot of "elite" programs there. Especially since 2005. Heck a lot of these programs have been through their own dynasty phases since '05.

Oregon: consistently winning. Yeah no national championships but they're always in the hunt.

Texas A&M: some good years and sometimes has solid teams. Their problems go further than just money though.

Texas: Won and competed for a few titles since 05. They just went through a weird time of bad hires and have similar issues that A&M has with boosters being too involved in the program.

Florida: Under Urban Meyer they were a national power. Then they had some really bad hires for a while with decent teams here and there. Their former players being under media spotlight here and there for egregious crimes didn't help the program. They can be a good program again.

UGA: Still currently running their best era in program history. But they were a force under Mark Richt too.

Oklahoma State: Consistent program with what they're given. Went through a long phase of being one of the best the Big12 had to offer and was always winning 9-11 games a year and competing for conference titles.

LSU: that's an elite program that just goes on a rollercoaster. I'm not gonna list everything they've done since '05.

Oklahoma: Elite program under Bob Stoops. Still up in the air what Venables will do with them since he just got there pretty much.

Auburn: rollercoaster program like LSU but they have won or competed for titles since '05 and have given the country solid teams here and there.

FSU: Elite program that has made bad hires of late and now is in a identity crisis.

Well yeah they may have had some bright or maybe elite moments

But they’re not all currently elite. They’re still loaded with cash, but no current correlation between money and elite status. Only UGA, Texas, and OSU are elite.
