2021 has been an interesting and very different football year for fans, players and coaches than any of us have seen for the past decade. Accustomed to offenses schemed up by Morris, Scott and Elliott and led by the likes of Tajh, Cole, Deshawn, Kelly and Trevor, we expected the same this year- not ever dependent on the run but using it to complement and keep defenses honest.
I love a high octane spread offense but it’s the type you live or die by. At some point this season, the coaches must have said in closed meetings something like, “We gotta run the ball, that’s who we are.” Well, it worked and looked good. We’ve all been disgusted with some of the play calling, dropped passes and horrendous underthrown, overthrown balls by DJ. It appears now that the OL wasn’t even structured to defend a pass defense.
For many years I’ve been envious of some of Bama’s teams who could line up, control the time of scrimmage and run smash mouth football. The past two games have proven some major adjustments on the offensive side of the ball. Fortunate to have Coach Venables as DC and keep us in games, I’m very thankful somebody stepped up the past few weeks and said, “We gotta run the ball, that’s who we are.”
The ability to change mid-stream is great coaching! Go Tigers! Finish strong, that’s who you are.
