What will the SEC do next?

Jul 27, 2021, 11:00 AM

Do they quickly go after other big name schools (Michigan, Ohio State, ND, Clemson, FSU, et. al.) and form a super league of 20-24 teams?

I don't think so. I think they are in great shape. No one knows how all this expansion is gonna end up. No one knows how the NIL will end up working. No one knows how the NCAA will work, or if it will just go away completely.

But, however it all ends up, in 5 years the SEC will still be the top dog. They don't have to do anything now. They can just sit back and watch. They don't have to go running after any other schools. Just watch the tornado hit, see what is left when the debris settles, see how NIL is working, and then wait on schools (big name schools) to contact them, just like TX and OU did.

They aren't worried about the PAC 12 and the B1G and the ACC figuring out a way to merge and become a super-league to rival the SEC.

They can just watch the fight and see who survives.

I suspect that 5 years from now the SEC will consist of the 16 teams (including OU and TX) that it is today. Then, round 2 can begin.

I think they are fat and happy. They don't need to do anything as they now control the vast majority of the college TV market.

The other conferences can merge all they want, but the Southeastern + Texas Sunbelt is the football market. I mean, which TV market are they NOT controlling? Everywhere else (NE/midwest/Pacific Coast) is as much if not more of a pro venue market.

I think if anything, it will continue to siphon off the B10's power which has been waning since the 70s, the ACC will still be a plucky thorn/rival if slightly behind on "value/revenue" and the PAC is still their own thing.

I think you end up with probably 3 super conferences. I could see a Big 10-PAC 12 merger. Lots of connection with Rose bowl through the years. I think ACC is in a precarious spot. If SEC could lure Clemson it would be dead.

They will try and monopolize colleg football TV markets.

They will form a 60 team league that excludes dead weight like Wake Forest and Syracuse.

They will use their monopoly to leverage huge contracts from ESPN.

If they do, will they have four divisions with the winners

being seeded 1-4 and play a semi-final and a final to determine their conference champion?

In totality, it will erode interest in college football.***
