What is the big difference in Auburn basketball interest...

Nov 25, 2021, 4:32 PM

And Clemson basketball interest? not saying anything about how they go about doing it by having Bruce Pearl as their coach who has cheated, but when Auburn really wins in basketball they will support it. Lot fans in the Bahamas to watch them play this week. We will also support a winner but wonder if our AD wants that in the next season or two if Brad doesn't get over the hump. I was at the 1st Charleston Classic in 2008 when OP was here. We had a lot of fans there after coming of the NCAAT and ACCT championship the season before and OP was building a lot of fan interest. Under Brad or someone else, we can it to that level again doing it the right way...

Bruce had a BBQ at his house and had recruits that weren’t supposed to be there, there. That’s hardly “cheating”, it was against the rules but gave no competitive advantage, paid a player to go there, etc.

Alabama is another football school that will really support basketball when consistently good in basketball. Watching them now in the Disney Florida tourney on espn2. Have a very good solid number of fans watching them play. Head Coach Nate Oats has been recruiting very well and next season has a top 6 class coming in...

Nah, that's not true. Pearl was involved in several

shady incidents before Tennessee dating back to his days as an assistant, and Auburn is currently in hot water right now. They self-imposed a postseason ban last year but I believe the NCAA is still investigating and could impose their own sanctions.

Pearl is a fantastic coach, but he has a long history of operating in and even beyond the grey area of NCAA rules, and then lying - which has probably gotten him in more hot water than his actual violations.

Again not stating you cheat, just that you can win at a bigtime football school and get a lot of interest from the fanbase. Why can't we have an AD who really wants to win in basketball. Same thing for the president. When Peesident Clements was at West Virginia they went to the Final Four.

Absolutely correct.

They just said Alabama is averaging over 10k in attendence at their home games in a 12k seat arena including 2k of students. That is fan interest.

Okaaaaaay. If Clemson had a good basketball coach, the fans would be interested. This has been demonstrated repeatedly. Keeping a good coach at Clemson would be problem. Brad’s obviously thrilled to stay at Clemson for as long as he can get away with it.

I think we have a decent coach, but he needs to win more consistently. We need a PR type of guy too as coach like Alabama and Auburn have. Nate Oats said when he got there we are going to win just like in football. Brad doesn't know how to excite the fanbase.

Nov 25, 2021, 6:10 PM

Have you ever noticed Brad always includes "his players" when he mentions anything about his program and not the fanbase:

"Our players deserve to have a good crowd"

"I apologized to our players" of the 6 players on the court technical.

When does he ever include the fanbase as a part of his program?

The fanbase should be a part of the team he is trying to attract and build up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's not a good take

Nov 25, 2021, 7:03 PM

last thing I want is a coach kowtowing to the whims of fans. Except for 3-4 years in program history, we'll draw once conference season begins. We play no one at home of any interest other than Miami and the coots until Duke 12/29. The crowds have been respectable this year considering weeknight games. Also comparing our tourney last week with 2 games in the afternoon on work days and holiday tournaments where people are off is not a fair comparison.

And if you're an Auburn fan, you really want to watch a loss by 40 to Bama?

I think the way DRad keeps throwing money at Brad, he would work very hard at keeping even a better HC at Clemson.

A better question would be why Clemson fans can’t support basketball

Nov 25, 2021, 7:33 PM

as well as Auburn fans can.

Blaming our coach, who has more wins than anyone in the program’s history, who is coming off of a top third ACC finish and NCAA Tournament berth, for subpar fan support is ludicrous.

We can and have

Nov 25, 2021, 10:04 PM

Why dont we do so now? There is an obvious lack of fan enthusiasm for the current program despite its success. Weekday basketball attendance has historically been awful except UNC/Duke games and this has never changed but we dont travel fans as well in the Brownell era. Is it covid, the economy, lack of faith in the state of the program or something else. There isnt a clear answer I can see.

When Clemson had Hootie Ingram coaching football, fans

Nov 25, 2021, 10:06 PM [ in reply to A better question would be why Clemson fans can’t support basketball ]

did not support the football team.

Large chunks of empty seats at home games even though the stadium held less than 50k at the time.

Same with Red Parker ... except for 1974 when he cobbled together a nice 7-4 season.

Fans didn’t begin filling the stadium every week until 1977 ... when the team started winning fairly regularly.

Winning excites the fan base, no matter what the sport.

Mediocre performance does not inspire fans.

No matter what the sport.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. Win and they will come. Matter of fact, win and.....

Nov 26, 2021, 5:11 AM

can't keep them away.

Heck, even be strongly competitive every night still lose and they will come.

But it is a long ride home at 11pm on Wednesday night after sitting thru a poor performance.

enrollment

Nov 25, 2021, 9:22 PM

more students produces more alumni which equals more fan support. Clemson is small and apparently wishes to remain that small considering we have no major university expansion plans despite historic popularity and name recognition over the past decade. Clemson could add 50% more students and still be smaller than SEC schools so many fans like use as comparisions.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: enrollment

Nov 25, 2021, 9:30 PM

Then why do we have so many fans in football for such a small school? Has to be the biggest ratio of support/small school in the country. Is it the walmart bandwagon factor?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: enrollment

Nov 25, 2021, 9:51 PM

We have always had a passionate FOOTBALL fan base mostly consisting of non alumni. No idea what "walmart" bandwagoning means but we have definitely added tons of new fans nationwide due to our recent success. It doesnt significantly help with local attendance and we arent taking advantage of that fact with university expansion. Miami is the only other small university that has seen comparable football success in the modern era. Yes we are a rare and special case that is really not comparable to SEC schools.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We have expanded a lot in my opinion.

Nov 25, 2021, 10:04 PM [ in reply to enrollment ]

We now have around 25,000 students. A decade ago, we had around 18,000.

I would’ve preferred that we keep enrollment the same, but Clemson leaders saw an opportunity with unprecedented student loan approvals and rising application numbers to increase enrollment and tuition to bring in more dollars. This has allowed us to get more loans to build and renovate more buildings.

The bubble has to burst at some point, once people realize that very few majors/careers pay enough to justify what college costs these days. Clemson is still a good bargain, but we aren’t immune to the challenges that are surely coming in the future.

If Clemson wants to grow, I wish school leaders would think bigger and add profitable graduate programs. It’s hard to increase the base of wealthy alumni by avoiding medical, law, and dental programs. I realize we have plenty of alums who have gone into those programs elsewhere, but it would be nice if Clemson offered those programs.

Win and they will come. Lose 16 point leads in the second half and they will stay. The fans like Brad but do not trust him to go to an away game. Similar to Tommy Bowden
