What if Trevor Lawrence…
Jul 28, 2021, 1:18 PM
|
|
had waited until he arrived at the stadium for the ohio state game last season and then announced that he was feeling a lot of anxiety and fear of getting injured by those defensive ends and linebackers who were intent on breaking him in two, so he wasn’t going to play. Those are legit concerns, to say the least. Would he have been a hero for doing that?

Let's add some details to your hypothetical...

Trevor shows up to the stadium for warm-ups, and can't complete a pass. The first pass of the game, a pass to a receiver 30 yards downfield goes 10 yards. On the second play, he throws a pick 6 and we're already in a hole.
He simply can't perform. In that situation, is Trevor Lawrence helping our team?
If he felt convinced that the backup would perform better and give us a better chance to win, wouldn't you prefer that he let the backup play? Or would you prefer that he dig his heels in and continue to play, despite an uncharacteristically poor performance, and put his coach in a tough position of either sticking with him and definitely losing, or benching him for the backup and possibly win?
And no, Trevor would not be lauded as a hero. Despite the feminist agenda, there is still a double standard in sports when it comes to how we expect our athletes to behave.

Not hearing any "mental health" issues there CBB...

Sounds more like a legit injury that's preventing him from performing. And no fair-minded person would castigate an athlete who is injured and cannot perform. In the real world that sort of totally-debilitating injury status is almost ALWAYS be known before gameday... and would likely be known days or weeks prior.
Oh, and one thing I forgot to mention in my hypothetical - TL16, former national champion and consensus #1 NFL draft pick, had a goat sewn onto his uniform before his gameday CFP opt-out.

Sure it's mental health.

In my example, Trevor isn't injured. He's overwhelmed by the moment, so stressed that his body can't perform normally.
I'm guessing you would show more grace to Trevor in a similar situation, since he's a male college football star for your favorite team, than you are to the greatest female gymnast ever.

I would doubly disappointed in Trevor because I've seen enough of his character and testimony to consider such behavior from to be inconceivable. I'm not saying it couldn't happen. I never in a million years would have thought DW4 would end up in the place where he is today. But it seems very much out of character.
I sympathize with SB, and if she can't perform anymore that's fine, she doesn't have to. The same thing happens to pro golfers all the time. They get a chronic case of the yips and they can't compete at the PGA level any more. I don't see a lot of heroism in it. Just a sad end to an illustrious career.

That reminds me of what happened when Alabama pulled its single-season TD leader in the national title game & replaced him with a true freshman who won the national title. Mental fatigue is often noticeable in sports; sometimes it works the opposite, too (ex., a player performs at an elite level after a close family member dies suddenly).
Comparing risks of a QB in football with gymnastics feels like comparing apples & velociraptors, though.

He Would Be an Icon of Bravery, Courage and Candor

I only hope when I am presented with a challenge like this I am smart enough to realize REAL courage is doing the hard things when you don't want to do them and delivering on your commitments. I feel bad for Simone, but she's hugely compensated for her fame and needs to deliver.

Seemed OK at Press Conference

She seemed calm at the presser. She was well spoken and showed no signs of anxiety. She could have helped the team if she had continued.
