Western North Carolina/devastation

One of my pastor friends (Scott Cavin out of Myrtle Beach) has rented Penske trucks and is ferrying supplies into Western North Carolina. He said the pictures and the videos don’t even come close to portraying what is going on.
Last night he had trucks full of bottled water and was within a half-inch of sliding down the mountain when he saw lights. He whipped the truck around and into a driveway, and it was the parsonage of Fairview Baptist in Fairview, NC. The pastor’s wife, holding candles, came to the door. She said her husband was in the valley trying to recover their church. When he looked over at the church, it looked intact. She saw what he was looking at, and said, “No, our church members. They were all swept into the valley and are buried under the mud and debris.’ While they were waiting in the dark, a fire truck rolled up and the pastor and fire chief got out. My friend asked how they could help, and the pastor choked back tears and then started to sob. He said there was nothing more that could be done (basically have to turn their attention to the living).
My friend said they need diapers, sanitary wipes, fuel (gas cans) and generators (that someone might not get back). They are creating a hub for supplies at the church, and he’s making another run at 4 AM tomorrow morning.
Remember these people, our neighbors. My power being out is an inconvenience but their lives are either lost or completely changed. If anyone knows how we can get them supplies, we are all ears.

This is such a sad and heartbreaking thing. I am concerned for those who are cut off and may not be reachable for a while. The more you hear the worse the situation sounds. I've been wondering if the corp of engineers could be mobilized to help build some temporary ways to reach these areas.

God bless them all. As I mentioned over the weekend here, I expect the death toll to be in the 1000s just in Buncombe county. It's unlike anything America has seen from a natural disaster in the Blue Ridge Moutains.
I have clients/friends with large equipment moving deris and helping search and rescue. We do work for the Biltmore and the reports we got Sunday were apocalyptic.
It will take a decade + and Billions in recovery money to get back what infrastructure was lost.

And yes, sounds very similar to the volume of water that we saw go through there this weekend.
Just unreal.

And keep in mind, there are a lot more gauges and better technology to determine that now than there were then. Crest in 1916 could have (and likely were) higher in some places along the river. The crest this past weekend could also have been higher in some places but unlikely due to many different gauges and technology to report on it.

Your image even shows the 1916 record of 23.1
You're right. It made history by 1.57'. But in terms of "seen before" weather event, that is semantics.

Wow, so in 1916 it took 2 storms in quick succession to do what Helene just did on its own. Crazy.

The entire Appalachian region got pounded by rain in the weeks and days prior to Helene making landfall.
You also have to consider that there are numerous dams along that entire watershed that exacerbate the amount of water coming down river by them releasing at full capacity in "oh #### moments" when, under natural circumstances, water flow would happen over a period of time and consistently. Without these dams releasing on thursday and friday the crests may have actually been lower than 1916 under a natural flow.

Driving dowm I-85 today through Charlotte, the road was packed with emergency vehicles, box trucks and work trucks which obviously were headed to the mountain area. The real problem is knowing how they are going to get to the areas which need the most assistance.
I-77 is backed up more than normal since I-40 and I-27 are unavailable.

I think we are at the point where the military needs to be mobilized to get things stabilized. It's that bad.

Man when this first starting hitting greenville sc and western north carolina i told someone before we now see what its become that asheville would become a nightmare if it got hit hard enough, and with the stories coming out, it's worse than most thought.
In a winding mountain landscape like that it's just no room to work, the people are trapped, main roads are out, and even the ones that aren't out you never know what's around the corner in a location like that, i'm sure even emergency helpers there have to be afraid.
I saw the greenville sc police chief went viral online for his proclamation that looters wont need ems but rather a coroners vehicle....a little bit over the top...but honestly i think he said the right thing, get control before it becomes a thing probably why downtown gville is so nice....
but i only say that to say this.....looting will become an issue on top all the problems in asheville i fear.....for anyone that's been there then you know it is a liberal place......please do not lecture me on watching fox news and being a maga supporter because i used the world liberal......i have never voted republican and i do not watch fox news.....but i'm just using the word as more of a factual adjective, it is a liberal place and there are alot of vagrants even before this happend, all i'm saying is i hope it doesnt get nasty.

Every time I drive I-40 from TN to NC I think about what a feat that stretch of interstate is winding up and down. You get the occasional rock slide that shuts down the interstate for 3-4 months. Now multiply that by about 50 for the damage to the transportation network branching out.

Used to live in AVL. Fairview and Cane Creek are a stones throw outside of town and they have been largely inaccessible up to this point. Sadly, I think that there will be a lot more deaths discovered as they get into this area and others like it. Roads completely washed out and/or buried under a pile of continuous trees. No running water, electricity, cell service, gas or ingress/egress from your home or what's left of it. The crazy thing is an hour and a half outside of some of these places, life continues as usual. The good news is things do get better by every passing hour, but it is a deep hole they are climbing out of.

Remember that uncoordinated volunteer efforts can be problematic.

Well intentioned volunteers can add strain on the damaged infrastructure, take the wrong things to the wrong places, and work at cross purposes with government and large NGOs.
Make sure that the effort is targeted, that the group has its own food, water, and sanitation for at least 3 times the anticipated deployment, and lots of extra fuel to move around where no fuel is available.
Have your own first aid supplies, too. Anticipate yellow jacket stings. Lots of their vests have been dried out. There places where they are angry and swarming. If you have a bee sting allergy, you might want to skip this one.
Make ABSOLUTELY sure that good intentions don't make the cure worse than the disease.

It is worse than can be imagined. Many people still missing, loved ones grieving, houses gone. Send whatever you can but do it quickly. FEMA and such will be here after much suffering. Water, gas, food, daily living supplies and hygiene items are needed. Thank you and go Tigers.

It's situations like this where I believe the church is at its best
1

There are already thousands of Christians from out of the area on the ground up there and more on the way. Thousands of churches are cooperating to make regular supply runs to the drop off points. We're collecting now for a run on Thursday and another on Tuesday.
One issue we're encountering here in Chester is supplies like water and baby items are in short supply. Some people panic bought things, like they did with gas here Saturday when every open station in the county, and there were plenty, ran out. Lines 75-100 cars deep. The stations that ran out had gas the next day, just stupid.
Also people from areas in the upstate are having to travel many miles to get basic necessities with the power outages still widespread and little is still open up there, and what is runs out quickly.
Pray that this dock workers strike scheduled for midnight tonight is averted, as that will crunch supplies even more

I hang out with a bunch of car guys. Some of them are pilots too. They've been shuttling supplies using their own private 'copters and planes from Statesville, NC and Concord, NC for 3 days now. We're gathering supplies for them to keep the airlift going. The reports coming back from the mountains are not good. The toll is going higher.
The first half of this video is from one of the more famous YouTube car guys (Cletus McFarland) that came up from Florida with his own helicopter to help over the weekend. Footage of several airlifts of getting people and pets off the mountains and supply drops too.

You're welcome. One my buddies said they are starting up another airlift from Goose Creek airport in Indian Trail, NC tomorrow. So that will be four airports I know of that are operating relief airlifts with private aircraft; Hickory, NC (the one in the video), Concord, NC, Statesville, NC and soon Indian Trail, NC. Good people doing good for others in need.

There has been a lot of helicopter activity the last couple days. They are taking donations at the App St Hickory campus and taking them to the airport. The biggest roadblock has been access, hence the helicopters.
I work for a beer distributor and we service Burke, Avery, McDowell, and Yancey counties, all severely impacted by Helene. We have several grocery stores that were flooded. No access to many of our accounts in the Banner Elk and Linville areas. Spruce Pine is an absolute no go for us. We have a truck going to NoDa brewing tomorrow to pick up 74,000 16oz cans of water to send up the mountain. Anheuser-Busch is sending a truckload of water directly to Red Cross in Asheville, our Hickory branch is getting a load, and our Greensboro branch is getting one as well. Asheville looks to have taken the brunt of the impact but our Highcountry neighbors took quite a beating too. Many roads will have to be rebuilt just to get access to fix the other problems. It’s quite a mess up there now.
We were lucky and missed most of it with minor damage compared to those to our north and west. Please keep them in your prayers!

Gut wrenching. I’ve seen and heard so many complaints in my area of the CSRA and while we have damage everywhere for the most part everyone is safe. We may just not have our luxuries.
I’ve heard people complain about FEMA, power not coming back in a timely manner, gas, etc…all the while families in western NC are grieving losses of loved ones, people are still stranded and fighting for their life.
This hurricane was a reality check for me. Raise your hands high and praise God for what you have.
