Was Brent the first choice?

If Brent was who they wanted from the start why did it take so long for them to get on a jet with a contract and get it done? They lost many players and commits by waiting so long! Sounds like somebody turned them down.

If Cincy didn't make the playoffs, I believe Fickell

was going to be their man. They just didn't want to wait until after the CFP to get a coach.

Yes but they had Stoops in place too keep the ship from fully seeking if they really wanted Fickell.

I would bet too much money BV was NOT the first choice. If he was there was no reason for OU to wait as long as they did to fly to Clemson and make him an offer he couldn’t refuse. I think whatever option(s) were ahead of him (ie Fickell, Lanning), the conf title games changed OU’s target list in terms of timing and priority.

A week or so ago someone on here made a great post about how these processes were run in the past, a school has who they are sure they can get and then a couple other options ahead of that fallback option. Can’t remember the exact terminology used (about horses iirc) and apologize I don’t remember the handle for the guy who posted it but I remember when reading, it sounded accurate then and in retrospect, was eerily similar to how BV’s hiring by OU seemed to play out.

Maybe V turned them down initially or didn’t appear interested so they decided to make the trip to convince him. If you’ve listened to him over the past however many years, he really liked it at Clemson and I don’t think this was an easy decision. Yes the money is likely 3x of what he made at Clemson but I don’t think that was necessarily a factor (or he probably would have taken head coaching jobs in the past).

He hadn't had an offer like Oklahoma before. And they don't send the group of people they did all the way to Clemson for a sales pitch.

I’m not saying they came to give him a sales pitch but he might have cracked the door open to show interest and to show how serious they were they brought the team to his house. Like in business, when you want something bad enough you don’t play it casually, you knock down the door to close the deal. My guess and no idea what V thinks…this was one of the few jobs he would actually take. From his press conference, sounds like he turned down Auburn last year (which was probably his to lose).

Wonder if Stoops brother at Kentucky who was co-DC with Brent at Okie was offered job?

I believe "bird in the hand" is the phrase used in the post

you are talking about, to describe the fallback choice. While Fickle may have been their first choice, another possibility here is that Venables was the one who was not willing to wait. Would they want to wait to negotiate with Fickle to see how that plays out and miss out altogether on Venables? Just a thought.

I think he was the first choice all along. I don’t buy the Fickel stuff at all.

He’s an Ohio guy his entire career, and I don’t think he’s going anywhere unless it’s OSU or ND.

I think OU reached out to Brent to gauge interest, then talked to Dabo. They probably interviewed Brent, waited, talked it over, then went and offered.

Maybe Coach V's agent was in negotiations with OU and they finally came to an agreement.

This is such a weird thread and maybe it's because I watched BV pressers today. I hadn't commented but many had high hopes ge was staying because he was recruiting. But people didnt remember every ladt year where BV cam out early and always said "I love where my feet are planted!", But those words were never mentioned during the OK search. I pretty much knew he was leaving but i didnt want to believe it.

Yes BV was their first choice, it was a hard decision for him. He said he think T-Bone is going to play in the Bowl for Clemson and he fully supported his son.

But for those that missed some personal questions, BV couldn't hide his belief in DS as a friend, family man, holistic person, but he said Dabo was the best coach and teacher he has ever known. There was so much promising praise. BV is a standup dude!

Credit to the OU AD that we really don’t know the answer to this. That’s how you do a search correctly.

Contrast this with Tanner’s searches for Scar. Muschamp was his desperation 5th pick. Even let RichRod play him. And Beamer was at least after Napier. Tennessee has had a couple of debacles in this area too.

Yes, Brent was their first choice. Oklahoma did an amazing job. It was expedient and efficient. To do what they did in 5 days is nothing short of miraculous. That's how I knew he was gone.

The AD is a sharp fella. They actually did have a plan in place. Took less than 1 day to have a press conference and stoops stepped up as an interim and immediately met with players and 22 recruiting class.

They had to get their BOR (BOT to us) assembled along with the lawyers to get the I dotted and t crossed. That happened in 4 days. CBV gave them a nod right away that he was interested. Just took time to get organized. CBV notified of details and told Dabo on Friday officially. So yes, in one week, they had it inked and a press conference. Amazing.

We're now on Day 4 and haven't heard a word. Nothing from our POS AD to reassure team or recruits. Hopefully we have this working in the background and we'll hear something today. And yes, according to a couple of our high profile recruits, jihad Campbell etc were and are shocked. Thank goodness Tre Williams took the ball and stepped up and hopefully difussed the shock.

We could only hope our university was efficient and organized as OU was. At least OU publically kept everyone abreast.

our POS AD??

We still have a head coach that has 2 national titles under his belt. We lost a coordinator not the head coach.

Everyone acts like the sky is falling. To hear the reactions, I believe some people would rather have seen Dabo leave than BV.

Sort of like a tennis, game, set ,match. Apparently it didn't matter to Brent. They asked, they offered and he accepted.

If you were offered a job that you really wanted that was more than doubling your salary, would you really care at all whether you were the first, second, or fifth person offered the position?
