Turning Point

Good morning, fellow Tigers. Long time lurker, class of '07. Tried to walk on freshman year but had two knee surgeries already by that point. I did make it through two weeks of camp before Coach Bowden announced they weren't taking any walk ons.

I also went to grad school from 2011-2013. DeAndre Hopkins was my next door neighbor during this time and we became extremely close. I played a lot of intramural sports with Tajh, Sammy, Nuk, even Mike Bellamy in a church basketball tourney. lol, ironic I know.

I say all of this not to brag or convince anyone I'm important, but I was an average athlete that had an alpha mentality. I never gave up until someone told me not to come back and I believe I can recognize this trait in others. I had to register and post something about what I witnessed Saturday night. Bottom line is we've missed on two QBs in a row. Other problems and weaknesses are on any elite team; Missing on a QB requires other Alphas to step up, but even those Alphas lose their spark when their 18-22.

We live in Ohio now and the kids keep me too busy to attend games anymore, but I read this site every day and I pray for my Tigers every night. My Grandfather went to Clemson. My father went to Clemson. Both swearing in their graves right now. I love Clemson with all my heart; I am as disappointed as anyone is right now.

These kids are still 18-22. Let's give them a chance to get back up after taking that mollywhopper from Louisville. Maybe the cards fall right and we go out to Oregon later this winter. Dillon Gabriel does not terrify me. Keep a little orange in those lenses boys. God still pulls for Clemson first lol. All in fun gents, glad to be on the site. Wish circumstances were better. God Bless.

and then look at the opponents

you'll see the opponents are more physically intimidating in stature and stance

the physical make up of these athletes has drastically changed

it's just not the same

the program doesn't attract the type of dudes that used to be on the field

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the personality type is very different too

it's now just wierd

great people in the program but not the type of guys that win and the coaches aren't the type of guys to say no / it's not going to work out for you

Walk-ons

I know a young man that was recently recruited as a walk-on for a Div 2 program. He had a signing day at his high school and everything. After summer camp, his coach basically said that he would never see the field except on the practice squad. I really think this was the plan by the coaches all along.

Football was the main reason he enrolled. He agonized over the decision, but decided to quit because the payoff was never going to happen and the cost of practice and prep was way too high. He spent the year miserable there and eventually transferred.

It takes a dedicated person to walk on.

There won't be any more FB walk ons after this season

The 105 roster expansion includes eliminating walk ons. Every athlete on the team gets a scholly.

Yep. Scholly for everyone, whether you deserve it

or not.

No school has to give 105 schollies.

They can have fewer on their roster.
They just can't use walk ons.

The likely result is that smart coaches will have maybe 95 or 98 scholarship players and leave some spots open for last minute transfers.

Average athlete with an alpha mentality

This comment resonated with me in a lot of ways. I attended Clemson in early 1980s. I would describe myself as an average athlete with below average physical attributes and an alpha mentality. I was planning to try out for one of two walk-on slots on the basketball team my freshman year. I had been offered what is now called a preferred walk-on deal at the Citadel so I really felt like I had a legitimate shot until I got a hernia 3 weeks before tryouts. Once everything healed from the surgery I worked my way into playing pick up ball with the football players at Fike on a regular basis. I was a regular on the court with Terry Kinard, Andy Headen, William Perry, Kevin Mack, Homer Jordan, Frank Magwood and others. I was usually the only person on the court who was not a football player and almost always the only player under 5’10” or so. I played competitive pick up basketball until I was 45 and played several times with Jason Taylor and a few other Dolphin players when we lived in South Florida. Like you, this is not to brag but to say I have been around some great ones and have seen their personalities and how they operate and I also understand very well how to “punch above your weight (in my case it was height) class”.
Our football team has a lot of great athletes and very physically gifted players. What seems to be lacking to me is the alpha mentality. The guys we had a few years ago ( I’m talking Power Rangers, DW4, TL16, the great receivers and guys like ETN) felt they could compete with and beat anyone. And trust me as a little guy who competed in a big man’s sport, that never quit, you can’t beat me, alpha mentality is a must if you want to compete consistently at a high level. I don’t know what to do if it is lacking, as I tend to believe it can’t be taught but is innate in some people, but I do believe it is lacking from our football Tigers right now.
I do still have my orange tinted glasses on, and will always be pulling for the Tigers, but there just seems to be something missing these days.
