Tony Elliot's Saturday

Finishes up final touches on a comprehensive, diverse, well-balanced game plan. Kickoff!

Tests the flat on a swing pass. Ajou whiffs his third block in as many games. Play blown up.

Tests the middle on a blast. Pitt loads the box, middle shut down.

Works the short pass to the TE. Galloway drops pass.

Works the long pass to the sideline. DJ throws interception.

Works the intermediate pass with shot over the middle. Shipley drops pass.

Contemplates going back to the run game but reviews roster - 21 Offensive Linemen with 1 grad, 2 seniors and 2 juniors. Then loses most experienced OL to season-ending injury. Scraps run game.

Stymied on the edge, and the middle, and the short pass, and the intermediate pass, and the deep pass, digs into the “tricks” bag with a shovel pass. DJ hands it to Pitt for a pick 6.

Desperately searches through book for plays that don’t require blocking, catching, or passing.

Lets Puma run it on a keeper on 3rd and 10.

Heads home, throws playbook in the trash, cracks open a 40, pours one out to 2021.

Hey Tony, we averaged 5.5 ypa in the running game. You probably should have stuck to the run.

Tony Elliot after LSU game: “Probably just in the second half, got the ball in Travis’s hands a little bit more, maybe stick with the run game."

Tony Elliot since then: Still yet to stick with the run game

I just don't understand it.

Has over 70 yards rushing in first qtr. Two or three Shipley runs close to going to the house…

2nd qtr: Let’s get DJ (who struggles with accuracy) throw 3 straight passes to our WRs (who struggle catching the ball). Surely that will work!

I'll go task for task with you.

You are being kind to Ajou. In fairness he is only on the field because of injuries in front of him, but he still can't read a defense. When he gets his hands on the defender he does well with blocking most of the time, but when he has to pick which guy to block on those screens he's almost always choosing wrong and not choosing at all and just standing around.

You are correct that we had a play or two stopped trying to run up the middle, but do we really want to complain when TE tries to run the ball. More runs in any direction on Saturday seemed like it would have been a great idea with the way we were running it in the 1st quarter.

The pass to Galloway was an excellent call by TE. Misdirection and the only guy in the picture from Pitt when the throw was made was a LB trying to chase down Galloway. A simple catch there gives us AT LEAST a 1st down and probably a 15-20 yard play depending on how quickly a safety recovered back into the picture.

Pass down the sideline was not accurate. It was also not a gifted INT like it appeared. Ross decided to flop and just lay on the ground rather than making any attempt to help his team or his QB.

Another great play call to Shipley. I know it's a play Shipley would love to have another chance at. Maybe now we know why the offensive coaches aren't playing him in the slot to help the WR depth.

I too would have liked to see us continue working the run game a little more.

There is no excuse for the INT on the shovel pass, but it's not a trick play.

It's tough to call the right plays when nobody is dependable on offense.

Would you have preferred to let Puma arm punt it like he did on his next 3rd down attempt? He isn't a good passer, so I believe Elliott was trying to keep the ball out of danger. Honestly what I am most disappointed with in terms of letting TP play is that many Tiger fans got to watch those 2 series and still don't realize the huge drop off between DJ and TP.

Probably the most appropriate use of his time between games because it doesn't matter whether you make great or terrible calls when your players don't perform simple tasks from play to play.

can be attributed to a lack of execution. The shuttle pass is a prime example. The defender is permitted to penetrate and over-pursue which opens up the running lane for the RB, but the QB has to actually look and then be smart enough not to pitch the friggin' ball right to the defender.

Exactly!

Blue and yellow uniforms look a lot like bleached whit uniforms - not!

Can DJ see? Does he need to have his eyes checked???

No...he just didn't look.***

He is supposed to have his eyes outside on the play to draw the defense away from the RB.

His error was not finding the line of his pass prior to releasing the ball.

His eyes were in the right place for the majority of the play.

His error was choosing to assume the interior was clear rather than taking a quick look ahead of time.

Correct !!!

He eyes are supposed to be outside to draw the defense toward him and away from the RB, but he still has to take a look before pitching the ball.

There is no excuse for throwing an INT on a shovel pass.

You are missing one point in your assessment of the play however.

Defenders are not supposed to be permitted to penetrate on the interior of the line. The blocking for that play is set up to allow a DE or OLB to pursue DJ to the outside and then shovel the ball to the RB underneath of the outside rush. Allowing that defender to shoot through the middle was a complete miss on somebody in the blocking.

However, I repeat that there is no excuse for actually tossing the ball to the defender.

Just pointing out the difference in where a correctly run play would have allowed penetration.

TigersO, I totally agree with your assessment. I thought the first half the play calling was pretty good except for the drive with 3 minutes left after Pitt had tied the score. Would have liked to have seen at least one running play. I do think that at least one of those passes could/should have been caught.

I think TP can definitely help with some packages but is not the answer as you stated. He is quicker than DJ but does not throw the long ball very well.

We have been spoiled as Clemson fans with the successes the last 10 years or so. We are getting some bad breaks this year with the amount of injuries to key players that we have not been able to overcome. I am disappointed in the games so far this year but realize that our coaches/players are trying their best. We are just extremely inexperienced in a lot of areas. Hopefully, this will pay dividends down the road as these players "grow up".

I seem to be in the minority of Clemson fans, but I felt TE was calling plays really well and DJ was playing well and both of them got worse with each time they were let down by the people around them.

It has been stated that DJ has struggled with confidence for much of the season and you can almost see it in his release that he forgets transgressions at the start of games and the longer the game goes and more WR drop passes and more OL whiff on blocks he starts to not trust what he is seeing on a given play call.

I can't say that I blame him too much for that.

If I was struggling at my job and the crew around me failed to do even the simplest tasks to help me perform, I would probably very unsure of what to do next as well.

DJ clearly knows he can't do it by himself and he doesn't know where to turn when his teammates aren't doing their part on even the most routine chances.

TO this was the best brief I have seen on this site of late. I also thought TE called a decent game. I thought the last drive for DJ was one of his best all year, it seemed to me the 2 minute drill improved his efficiency. Maybe having to think less and just execute?

The lack of execution was pretty easy to see Saturday.

Drops, inaccuracy, lack of separation/fight for the ball, missed assignments, penalties, no confidence.

No wonder we are sub-100 in so many offensive categories.

Amazing
